I recently purchased a 97 f350 crew with a 7.3. My friend said the tranny overheated when he was backing his 5th wheel into the backyard, now some sort of dummy light will not go off while going down the freeway, have you guys heard of this before, the truck shifts fine and that is the only problem I am having. Any help is appreciated.
Try disconnecting the batteries for a while to clear the computer, then if the light comes back on you can get the codes read to see what the problem is.
Hopefully one of our experienced tranny guys will chime in with more insightful advice.
if he got the trans hot in reverse you could of burnt the reverse clutch up.the computer sees a slip and runs line pressure up to try and stop the slip.it will stay high till the computer is reset. does it engage really hard. have the code read and get back with us.
I will unhook batteries as soon as I go pick up the truck in Ca. Do I need a tool of some sort to read the codes or does something flash with some sort of pattern. I am very new to this type of thing, this is my first Ford Diesel so hopefully I do not sound to ignorant.
you will have to have it checked with a scanner at a dealership or reputable independant repair shop. you dont sound ignorant at all.welcome to the web site, there are a lot of smart people on this board.let us know what you find.
Ok guys here is a little more info. the truck drives fine shifts hard anyway due to shift kit, the overdrive lite is blinking on the end of shifter,(I am assuming a code) I am going to unhook battery and change filter, oil in the tranny hopefully this will fix problem. I will let you know thanks for all of the help.
