Differences between Explorer and Mountaineer 302???
I am going to swap a 302 (5.0L) motor into my jeep. I'm trying to find out if there are any differences between the 99-2000 Explorers and Mountaineers. I have found Mountaineer motors with fewer miles and at a better price.
My plan is to use a late-model, low mileage 302 with the GT40P heads and switch out the fuel injection set-up (except throttle body), wiring harness, computer, and some other misc. parts from an 89 Mustang (I already have the mustang but the motor is complete junk). This will allow me to eliminate all the emission and ODB II crap from the late model Explorer/Mountaineer.
I've already searched via google and several of the Jeep/Offroad boards. I'm looking for confirmation from some ford 'experts'.
I went to www.car-part.com, typed in 2000 Ford explorer 5.0 vin P, and selected engine. Mountineers as well as explorers came up, so they must be the same.
Yea...I did the same thing but if you search for 90 ish mustangs it brings up several different body options. And I KNOW those are different (many less desirable than others on the same cross-reference list). Sorry, this is too important to trust car-parts' cross referencing.
I know the motors are 'similar' (and probably swapable). Are they the SAME - Everything I read people are swaping Explorer motors...no mention of Mountaineers? If they're not exactly the same, what are the differences?

What are you looking at? I looked up the 90's mustangs, and the only difference was the cobra vs a regular mustang. The cobra was more than just a body option. Besides the motor, there are suspension and brake differences too. The cobra had more horsepower with different components onthe engine, thus the different engine listing.
You can also go to some of the parts houses and look up heads, gaskets, motor mounts, etc. between the mountineer and the explorer. I bet they are all the same.
Go to www.partsamerica.com and look up the computers. See if they are the same. If they are, that means they probably had the same tune to the engine.

I just did a search:
1990 Mustang
Part: Engine
Location:Texas
1990 Mustang pulls up mustangs from 1987 (SD not MAF) to 2002. There is a pretty big difference between a Mass Air Flow and Speed Density. This listing also pulls up various years of Lincoln Mark Series (mainly VII) vehicles (also not as desirable as the 89-92 Mustangs but I cannot recall why at the moment). No cobra listing (or maybe I don't know how to read the 'description'. These are significant differences...are there similar differences between the 99-00 Explorer/Mountaineer?
This inconsistency in car-parts' Mustang cross-referencing has me a little worried about trusting the mountaineer cross-list. I HOPE you are right...I HOPE they are the same. I just need some additional verification. I'll try the computer cross-reference you mentioned.
Anyone else know something more concrete than Franklin2 and I speculating based on a car-parts.com cross-reference.
