302 parts interchange

My '72 302 is pretty worn out, might have actually bit the dust today so i'm really starting to look at swapping in a later model 5.0 after talking to some friends. I don't want to keep the engine fuel injected for simplicity reason since I wheel my Jeep pretty hard, and while EFI is nicer when running at angles, there's just a lot less stuff to get wet or break.

In order to swap from EFI to carbed on the newer engine, all I should need to do is put my carbed intake, carburetor, and distributor on and put an electric fuel pump in, correct? (well, after removing all the EFI parts).

Here's my other question. It seems that the easiest to find 5.0's are the ones that came in front of an auto transmission. I know theres a difference in balancing between the flywheels, so I need to use a later model flywheel, correct? Or can i swap the balancer and my current flywheel on to the 5.0 and use that? Also, having never gone from an auto to a manual, will I run in to any devilry with the pilot bearing? Thanks in advance!

Pretty much right on everything. Low pressure electric pump for the carb, since late timing covers don't have the hole or cam eccentric (or swap those from your existing 302). I think the balance is the same, but don't quote me on that part. Maybe someone else can give the correct 411 on that. Crank should be the same on the pilot bearing question. Just pop a bearing in the machined hole and you should be good to go. The HO has a different firing order, so pay attention to that if you get an HO motor.

the balance is different. you can not use the flywheel and balancer off of any 302 81 and down on any 302 82 and up. so you need the 50 oz. stuff.

Alright, think im calling a semi-local yard tomorrow to see what they want for a HO 5.0 with manual flywheel. Now, will my MSD pro-billet dizzy work from my 302 or will I have to get a new one? This is going to be one of those projects thats just gonna snowball...i can tell....

it will work but since the new 5.0 has a roller cam, you need to change the dizzy gear to a steel gear.
