Frame Rail Fuel Filter

ok, on my 2000 psd, I change the fuel filter in the water seperator every 15,000 miles. what about the frame rail fuel filter, when or how often should it be changed? and does it take special tools to release the fitting?
I would like to go back with double clamps. any suggestions? Thanks.

I believe you'll find that the "frame rail fuel filter" on your 2000 is actually the fuel pump. Check to see if it doesn't have a wire going to it.

That's the pump.

I did the tank mod and installed a pre-pump filter.

what kind and where did you get it and what micron rating

would that decrease the life of the fuel pump?

I believe it's a 10 micron.............entrained air is the problem.

Pre-Pump fuel filtration is very important in a modified fuel system. Whether you're installing the basic "in tank" fuel system mods or upgrading to a larger Pump & Pickup, you'll be eliminating the fine mesh screens installed in the tank by the factory. This leaves the fuel pump unprotected and can result in premature damage to the internal components of the pump as well as shortened service life of the stock filter. There is a very large selection of diesel fuel filter setups to choose from. Some offer improved water separation and lower lower micron level filtration and in the case of the AirDog...air removal. The prices of these filters are as diverse as the filter offerings themselves. The most important factor is the protection of the fuel pump, which can be accomplished by an inexpensive "throw away" filter for those on a tight budget, but these filters sometimes have their own "issues". Better filtraton, water separation or air removal can be obtained from a number of high quality aftermarket fuel filter setups, and these can certainly increase the life of the fuel system components, decrease stock filter service intervals and result in cleaner fuel.

Fuel filter head and filter can be had at NAPA and Baldwin.
Dahl makes a special filter and air separator as well.

You may have to call your local NAPA dealer for the part and number. They carry Wix and not Baldwin.
Some Baldwin filter bases have only 3/8" NPT ports. You need 1/2" NPT.

Wix filter base part #24766, dual 1/2" NPT in and out with plugs.
NAPA filter: #3418 water seperator filter.
