Well guys I had noticed some noise coming from "under my truck" since short after I recieved it, not grinding or anything just a small quiet "clink" every now and then when I switched between drive and or reverse. Just yesterday (Thursday) I decided that since we were slow at work I would service the rear of the beast. In draining the fluid I found that it was WAYYYYY past due for change and that the front yoke seal was leaking slightly so the rear end was every so slightly low on fluid (within 1/2" of fill hole) I replaced the seal and cleaned the rear out no excess metal shavings or chunks...nothing to abnormal, but the rear end had quite a bit of play between teh ring gear and pinion. I fillered er' back up and she drove fine for that day, then today I noticed while turnin the truck seemed to shake pretty bad I thought well maybe the tires but then noticed tonight on a trip that it was actually clanking and I think something is broke!! what do I do and where can I get "beefier" than stock replacement rear end parts?
Did you add friction modifier to the rear end? You will need 2, 4 oz bottles from the dealer ship. This will solve the chatter of the limited slip diff. BTW wear nose plugs it smells really bad
hmmmmm.....never heard of the stuff, I will get it from the dealer tomorrow. But will that stuff elimante the vibration/catching of the rear end? because when you turn it actually catches up like something is getting stuck????? WTF I will try that stuff tomorrow.
That is exactly what it is for the chattering of the limited slip diff. It'll solve your problem. But remember it stinks, BAD. you will need the 7 oz, so just dump the full two bottles in (8oz) won't hurt a bit.
but if it only makes noise when I turn wouldn't that be the spider gears? not the limted slip? I dont know much about the whole differential assembly, and remember it GRABS while it chatters when turning. Does that mean I have totallyscrewed the rear up?
yeah the friction modifiers work in the clutches in the LSD. if there is no modifiers, the oil makes the clutches grab, it chatters and hops like a locked diff.
In the corners is where you will hear it because the outside wheel needs to turn faster then the inside wheel in a corner but the clutches are grabbing and causeing the clicking or shuddering. put the modifier in trust me. You need it anyway, if it solves your problem then good you did what you needed. If it doesn't fix it you still needed it and you know you need to look for more problems
I added some modifier sold by NAPA, its what my friend a good mechanic recomended, it solved some of the chattering but not all. I used mobile one 75W 140 synthetic gear oil filled it to the bottom of the fill hole, drove a little jacked up one side to let the fluid drain to that axle and repeted for the other side. Then added the friction modifier and refilled to the bottom of the fill hole. Drove it for about 50 miles and it still does it. BUT...................this morning while it was cold it didnt do it at all!! it only does it after I have been driving it a while.
Do some figure 8's in a wide open space. BTW, if you overfill (more than 4 quarts) you will puke some out your vent tube and might leak some or damage the pinion seal.
WOW.................Oh my God that stuff works!!! I didnt believe that a " gear oil modifier" was my whole problem!! but that 8oz worked!! no more noise or grabbing and it feels so much better on take off!!!! thank you guys!!!!
