Sounds like you have an automatic system installed. The lever senses the position relationship between axle and frame. When you put the weight of a trailer on the back end, the backend drops down, changing the position of the lever. The lever then opens an air valve and puts more air into the airbags. The process is reversed when you take the weight of the trailer off of the truck.
