smog pump

I have a 1986 that still has the original smog pump and all that goes with it, it is all still working as far as I know. I was wondering if it is a benefit to do away with the smog pump, cat. converter ect. and pro's or con's of doing this. Main reason I am asking is the pump is making aoud whinning noise, very anoying. thanks scott dove

It all depends on whether you have to pass emmision tests or not. If you do, just get another AIR pump and put it on. If not, then I would rip those suckers off in a New York minute.

One more thing, is your truck fuel injected or carbed? If it's fuel injected, don't rip any of your emmisions off or your truck's computer may go haywire and it will NEVER run the way it was designed to.

The '85's were carbed, but still had EEC-IV computer control. So if you off it, take digital pics or make sketches good enough to put it back together.
