E4OD concerns
I have a 92 F150 with 5.0L and E4od. I smoked the motor, so i have the motor out right now and wanted to service the tranny also. I dropped the pan to change filter and fluid and the fluid was really scuzzy. it was very very dark with just a tint of red to it. I have had it for about 70,000 miles so i thought it would be a good idea to change it. The truck has 210,000 on it. I would guess it may not have been changed since new or at least a long time ago. I am going to put new fluid in. Do you think it will survive or not? there is not a lick of varnish in it, so i hope that is a good sign. I pulled the torque converter just to see what the front of the tranny was like too. I found a small c-clip laying under the torque converter in the bell housing. I could not see any where that this would go. Any ideas?????
I know the motor was out once by the local ford dealership for a new motor at 40,000 miles. Where could this c-clip have come from and where should i look to put it back in?????
thanks guys.

as far as some mods to it, theres is lots you can do now. first i would replace the nutral safty switch. they are not that much, order from rockauto.com, cheaper than the dealer. this is a must to do when it starts shifing hard.
now you can pull the trans out and take it to a good trans shop. one that has worked and modified fords trans before. have them drill out the fluid transfer holes to the tourq converter. it will improve the flow of fluideds to the tourq. and will give you a better lockup.
next would be to install a B&M offroad shift kit. it will give you the "butt sucked to the seat feelling when she shifts!))
also and very important CHECK THE LINES TO THE RADIATOR and make sure the fluid it going both ways. (this is how i lost two trans in a month, 2300.00 a pop each to rebuild)the wife still reminds me of that. if anything, buy a tans cooler and you will never have to worry about the radiator leaking the trans fluid in to the radiator.
mine all started with a simple thermostat not opening, then the water pump, thats when the trans went out. after the rebuild, and then burt it up, i took it to the shop for the second rebuild, he said it was because of the radiator leaking the trans fluid and not retuning the fluid to the trans. this also caused the fluid to burn up the water pump.
