rear end help

Hey guys... need some help. I recently had a new Auburn Gear Limited Slip and new ring and pinion put into my truck. While it was being put in, the mechanic said he had a difficult time getting the c-clips back on the right axle. Seems the new limited slip kind of "got in the way". I was suppossed to return the truck a week later to have him adjust the pinion depth, etc. The probelm is, when I brought it back, he told me he could not get the c-clip off, so he could not adjust the gears, so they are still whining around cruising speed. He told me that maybe after another month or so, there will be enough "slack" for him to get it off, and that I should bring it back then, unless I can find out if there is a special tool to get the c-clip off. Does anyone know if there is one? I spent a lot of $$ on myu new gears, and don't want to fry them. Also, I'm stationed overseas and my choice of mechanics is limited. The new limited slip works grewat though. I've put over 1,000 miles on it already, and took it off roading yesterday. It locks up much quicker than the stock unit. Other than the whinning, I'm happy with it.

hate to tell you this, when you run a new ring gear and pinion, they "wear"into each other. Chances are, you're going to deal with a noise from now on. When you set up a rear end, you use marking compound on the gears when new to see how the components mesh with one another--then make adjustments before the vehicle is driven.

I know bout the marking compound, but the deutch-bag mechaninc said he still needed to add shims... and he needs to get the c-clips off in order to get to the ring and pinion. Also, if I ever need to replace an axle seal, I'll need to remove the axle too.

vloney is correct, the ring and pinion wear together and need to be adjusted BEFORE being driven down the road and certainly not after driving it for a month! You must have rear disc brakes, in order to get the axle in far enough to remove the c-clip, you must turn the studs on the axle so that one is at 11:00 and the other is at approx. 1:00.

My truck has drum breaks and I had to remove a retaining bolt out to slide the pinion shaft out enough to slide the axle in enough to remove the C-clip retainer thing. Probably no help, just thought I would add my two cents...
