I put in a 35 gal aux tank (new, no excuse) and didn't put a inline filter on the line where I pump it into my front tank. The filter and the FPR screen clogged. I'm out in the middle of nowhere in S.D. and managed to get a new filter. When I tried to clean the FPR screen it, of course, fell into the great valley. I couldn't find it so I walked to the Ford stealership and they wanted 50 bucks for a kit. The kit included a screen, plastic ball and plastic (don't know what to call it) that inserts into the FPR housing opposite the filter housing! Anybody have a link for removing the fuel filter housing? I'm sure what I need is laying down there. Also, could I just make a screen and put it back together? What is the heck is this little plastic ball, that suppose to go inbetween the screen and the plastic insert in the FPR housing, do?
Well, I figured out how to take the filter housing out. Found the screen but no little plastic ball that's suppose to go inbetween the screen and the FPR. When I was at the stealership I saw a diagram and it had that little ball. Does anybody know anything about it? Also, I cleaned everything up and still no go. I put two gallon jugs under where the drain is and let her run with the value open. Lots of crap in the bottom but the filter doesn't look bad at all! Now I'm thinking CPS which I'll change out in the morning and report back. In the mean time, please, do I need that damn little plastic ball???? Thanks (no international dealer around here)
I feel like I'm talking to myself. Help, Help, Help, I'm stuck. Changed CPS today, went 100 miles and the same old crap. Refering to my first post, its got to be the load of junk I let get into the system. I cleaned the FPR, the fuel bowl and the tank selector switch. OH, the fuel pump, could it be clogged???????
this is why i didnt want this split up but most where all for it. not enough of us obs guys here to make it worthwhile. i have never seen the ball on mine. it may be stuck or whatever. if your truck runs similar to how it was before and same mpg forget it. i know your pain on the 50 bucks. i needed the big oring for the same area yesterday. well needless to say the ford guy gave me some a/c orings for .80 a piece. i bought 5. i figure if they dont last i'll keep changing them until i can justify 50 bucks or come up with a right sized viton oring.
ok next venture. i could be way wrong but i think diesel tanks have a special coating inside of em. are you sure the new tank is clean? maybe you can have it boiled out to be cleaned.
why not switch back to what works for the time being until you are 100% on the new tank?

If the administrators kick me off this forum then they have never been stranded out in the middle of nowhere or do not have any conpassion. The OBS forum is not helping and I know there is a vast amount of knowledge over here. This is my post 'over there': I thought I would add some fuel capacity with an aux 35 gallon tank. A new one so, stupid me, I didn't add a inline fuel filter. Taking our 5er to N.D. after 400 miles it would barely run. Cleaned fuel bowl and new filter and on our way. One hundred miles, same thing. Took the FPR off and cleaned it and got a steady 60psi pressure and went another 100 miles, same thing. Now I cleaned the tank selector switch, no go. OH, I should mention, I have the aux pumped into front tank and after this started switch to rear tank that's clean fuel. Would anybody think that the fuel pump could be clogged up or ruined by the junk?? I can put a gallon jug on the water drain hose, start it up and it will fill the jug up in a hurry, with crap in the bottom. For the way it ran I changed the CPS and that din't help. Is there any thing else that someone can think of that I can clean or do?? It will run good at idle for a few seconds then run real rough. Thanks!!!!!
P.S. I dread the thought of going to a stealership tommorrow!!!!!!

I'll let this thread ride due to your extenuating circustances and move it back to the proper forum once you get back on the road or home.
If your jug is filling with crap like that then I'm pretty sure that there is a lot of crap stuck in the pump as well and you'll end up needing a new pump.
Isn't there a sock filter on the end of the pickup tube for the aux tank? If not, get one put on, or at the very least get a large inline filter that you can easily change quickly. I realize that it's shutting the barn door after the animals run off, but it will stop anything else that might be left in there.
An inexpensive filter that comes to mind for me is one that is for a 93-99 gas engine VW Jetta. It's a large cylindrical filter with flare fittings on either end. It would be a simple matter of cutting the feed line from the aux tank and installing it inline with a couple of hose clamps. The filter is nearly 4" long and 3" in diameter. It would make changing that auxiliary filter quick and easy if it ever clogged.
I'll check in from time to time today to see how it's going.

you might be able to pull them fuel lines off the pump and see if you can clean them out that way. i would use something like wd40 i wouldnt use a carbcleaner (too dry) and blast some of that crap out of the pump and see if se will run after that. i would dump some dfa in the bowl before you start back up after doing that.
The replys I've got so far are concentrating on the aux tank. I'll deal with that later. As soon as this started, I immediatly switched to the clean rear tank that is isolated from the auz and the front tank that are contamiated. Thanks Kwik, I was hoping you would chime in. So, you are saying, take the fuel pump off and clean it or buy a new one based on all that I've done so far? Is there anything else I can do before I go to the dreaded stealership tommorrow? I don't know if you can dissassemble the fuel pump or not. If you can, then you can take it apart and clean it all out. Jake has far more experience than I on the OBS trucks.
Thinking about your situation, I'm starting to wonder if you didn't get a bad batch of fuel and you have crud going through all three tanks, or whichever ones got filled last. New tanks simply don't have that much crud on the inside unless they REALLY screwed up.
I would add that once you get your fuel pump cleaned out, you need to make sure that whatever is feeding it is squeaky clean too or you're back to square one with a clogged pump.
Do you have access to compressed air? Maybe disconnect all the fuel lines and blast them out?

Kwik, I didn't know that both tanks can be feed by the return lines. I've never seen the needle raise on one while the other goes down, (If you switch back and forth). I'm confused. Glenn
I'm sure that each tank has it's own return line.
I hope that I'm not creating more confusion than is necessary here, no experience with OBS diesel trucks at all. I had a 95 gasser, but they are completely different, they have electric pumps in each tank.
Your fuel pump is on the engine, so I'm assuming the tank switching is going through a switching valve that switches both the feed and return lines. Hmmm, come to think of it, that unit may be clogged as well if the trucks are so equipped.
