He has the opportunity to try 2 of the mowers out at his place to see which one he likes better. The Gravely and the Toro are from 2 different places so we're gonna see if we get both of them on the same weekend and both drive them and then switch. Some of the brands that you guys are talking about must not have any dealerships around my area because I've never heard of them. The one thing I have noticed is that they all have Kohler's or Kawi's in them. I guess it comes down to how well the chassis and the deck are.
our personal mower (that us americans use) is a Kubota ZD21. it is a diesel, which i love. it also has a 60'' deck, which is superior in cutting ability. it runs MUCH quieter, i guess the combination of the smooth-running diesel and the deep-deck howling design makes it run very quiet. it does have a pivoting front axle. i like it better, suspension seat, roll bar, better weight distribution, hydraulic deck lift (the scag is foot-activated), etc. it also has a feature where you can lock the front wheels in position, and crank the axle like a jack so it lifts one wheel way high in the air. this lifts the front of the mower for easy blade-changing. both mowers are great, i would pick the ZD21 over the scag. but one downside, is that ours was $10500. i guess the diesel. if you would like, i will get pics of both tomorrow, or give more descriptive info if you'd like. kubota also makes a smaller ZD18 (18 hp), and a ZD 28 (28 hp). the 21hp is more than enough for the 60'', and probably the optional 72''. scag also makes a "sabertooth tiger" which is 37 hp gas (fuel hog!) or 31hp TD.
My boss just bought one of those. It is a great machine with an AWESOME cut. Nice ride and goes fast.
How do you guys like that Jake? We had one that manged to accumulate 3600 hours, which is amazing because the thing was a POS. We replaced it with a Toro Groundmaster 580-D and that thing is a tank.
Jake runs good so far...cept for hydraulic probs. We had a blade motor go out, same one, 2x's. Now, after she gets warm, when we turn it to the left, the wheels stick, and the steering wheel will just spin, talk about scary, when we take it on the road, try to make a left hand turn and it doesnt turn...... We took it in to have that fixed and they said it was fixed. It was ok for a few months, but now its doin it again. Other than that, its an ok machine. Ours is fairly new, so I have no idea what the potential for hours on it is. But for as much as we use it, I'm sure we'll keep it a while.
I have a 48" "Wright Stander" 20 H.P. twin Briggs & Stratton motor. Each wheel has it's own hydraulic motor. Sounds like you need a small tractor for those acres.
