I replaced the worn out 12.5 hp engine on my lawn tractor with a 15.5 hp today. I still have a few things to connect but it fired up. I bet it cuts good. Its a 25 year old Murray 40 inch rider. My grandfather bought it new. I got the engine from my cousin for free. You can't beat it. I will post some pics Sat.
My youngest son, Brad, and I cut some grass a few days ago.
The fertilizer is doing it's job, for sure!
The back yard is thick and lush, with scattered spots of dog poo (that Brad has to 'scoop'!)
I've got an old "Monkey Warts" (Montgomery Wards for you youngsters out there), 16 hp B&S I/C twin engined, 42" deck rider. ('91 or '92 model)
I did replace the front pivot arm, spindles and bearings a couple of weeks ago, and put a tube in one of the rear tires. I put new blades under the deck, and changed the oil, too.
The old girl fired right up.
This has been a very good mower, for an MTD.
I have to cut the front and side yards, today, even though it's Easter.
They're starting to look like a jungle, because of all the rain we've had.
I wish we had a riding mower. For now we're still using a push mower. We were using my wife's grandfather's craftsman push mower(eagle engine) from 1989. It still ran. The deck finally rusted out. You can't kill those engines. I gave it away. We recently bought a key start push mower from Lowes. It's awesome. I can't believe there's key starts on pushmowers now. lol. FYI, it's not for me. It's for my wife. She's tiny so the pull start is hard for her to use.
I have 1 acre to cut. A push mower is out. I may be getting a JD 38 inch if the trade works out. With it & my Murray I might cut a few yards for extra cash. I believe the key switch is bad on the Murray. I'll bypass it & find out. Murrays have cheap decks. A ant hill will bend one. I have 2 of the same model so parts are cheap. I really like the 110 John Deere I hope to get.
Going from a 12.5hp to a 15.5hp engine...that is a Tim the tool-man taylor philosophy right there. I like it.
Just cut the grass today. While I was mowing I happened to look at the hour-meter on it and over the last 3 years I have spent 207 hours on that thing... buh lol
The 15.5 hp was free. It fit without any mods. I have a newer 14.5 with a real oil pump & filter now also. If the 15.5 gives me much grief I'll use the 14.5.
My yard is in Seattle, I'm in AZ (85 here - no grass to mow). My yard was trimed and mowed for free by my son OJ. The old mower, 15 years old, started with the help from some starting fluid. He'll get even this summer with rebuiding a deck. ha ha
