99.5 350. changed cps last week due to the truck not quite acting like its normal self. heres the deal. every couple of days I'll be driving around and all of a sudden the go pedal doesnt work. the truck idles at 1000rpm but pushing the pedal does nothin. the ces light flashes 1 time for about 5 seconds then goes out. after all this happens 15 seconds tops everything comes back to normal. then when i start driving and the truck starts to shift. 1-2 is fine 2-3 the truck starts bucking like it is running out of fuel. get of the pedal and right back on and it does it again. if you really get on the gas it wont do this.this is the same condition I had last week before the new cps. sorry long post, hope you all can help.
No throttle response, engine idles only, DTC's P0220 or P0221; Vehicle jerks in parking lots, especially manual transmission:
Idle Validation Switch.
The IVS tells the PCM that the accelerator pedal has returned to the idle position. Even if the pedal is fully depressed, if the IVS remains off, the engine will only idle. Watching the IVS and AP data stream, the IVS should switch on below 1.41 volts according to Ford. Navistar spec is 0.2-0.3 volts above base AP voltage. If the PCM sees the Accelerator Pedal sensor voltage increase with out the IVS switching on, it may set a code. The IVS and AP sensor cannot be replaced without replacing the entire pedal assembly. If the IVS switches on at too high of a AP voltage, it can cause the truck to buck at low speeds as the IVS cycles on and off as the driver tries to control his speed. The only way to correct this is to first loosen and turn the AP sensor to reach the lowest possible voltage reading on the scan tool and retighten. Then bend the IVS stop to adjust the on/off point to 0.2-0.3 volts above the base AP voltage reading. Note: There have been cases of lack of throttle response and the above codes which were caused by the PCM not recognizing the IVS "on" signal. Replacing the PCM corrected the problem.
Is this something that can be intermittant? the problems that I am having may occur 2-3 times per day or once per week. I don't know of anyone with a code scanner. are there any good ones available for me to purchase?
This simular thing happened to a friend of mine. The throttle is a fly by wire system, something like a joy stick. Using cruise control alot will burn a spot in the potentiometer and the computer sees this as fail and automatically fails to idle. This is a good thing. Unfortunately my friends failed about a hundred miles from nowhere while pulling a 32ft trailer. If this is your problem, you can buy complete replacement throttle for about 80 bucks, takes less than 20 minutes.
ok, I went out and bought a code scanner. guess what? no codes in computer. now I cant get the truck to act up on me now. Im leaving the scanner plugged in so when it does happen hopefully I can pull a code.
I had the cel come on while driving yesterday. I also had my code scanner plugged in at the time. when I tried to read the codes while the cel was on I still came up empty. no codes returned. I think I want to replace the throttle assembly. who has a good price on these?
I know what you are going through. It took a few time for me, while the engine was on as well as the CEL to finally get a reading. Fortunatelly it was the CPS and I know you have already replaced it. I actually carry a spare throttle assembly in my counsel. It is kinda big, but it fits. I paid 80 bucks for mine from Powerstrokeshop.com. I live in Calif, and I had it within 3 or 4 days.
Good luck to you and be safe
Know What? I actually had to call them for that part, because it is not listed in their online catalog. The people are really nice and willing to help. While you are at it, get yourself another CPS, around 95 bucks, to have as a spare as well.
I'm expecting my new throttle aasy today. is this just a bolt on deal or do I have to adjust the sensors and what not? got it from powerstrokeshop.com. 98 bucks, shipping and all
Just about as easy as pluging in your engine code reader. Depending on year, you could have a 1 or 2 plug assembly. Unbolt and unplug the old then plug and bolt on the new. A caution is you might want to remove battery cables as you would with any electrical maintenance.
ok, I got it in today. super easy. 5 minute install. do you guys ever stop to think that all the stuff that breaks often, throttle, cps etc. is super easy to replace. could this be a coincidence or fords way of making alot of money servicing these trucks. cps and throttle assy are both at least one hour of shop time billed to us but a backyard mechanic can do both in under 15 minutes.
Very true. I often wonder what can be next. I am hoping with the education and experiance offered from this forum and others, we die hard Ford Truck drivers can help each other out. My father, even though he is pretty mechanically savy, had a problem in N. Cal while on vacation. He is a little to old to be crawling under his truck, so he went to a stealer, His bill was in the thousands. Heck, I would have driven up to help him, and could have probably save him a ton of money, but I didn't know of his problem untill he had returned. We all need to look out for each other and offer what we can.
