Longtime lurker, first time poster. There is a lot of good info in these forums so I know I in the right place. I've been shopping the used diesel Excursion market over a year now and I've only focused my search on 2 wheel drives. This has been due to I have no real need for 4X4 and the extra cost it adds to the selling price.
As the time nears to pull the trigger and I'm seeing both 2wd & 4wd in my price range and mileage criteria. For what limited time I would expect to use 4wd, from maintenance, wear and fuel milege aspects would a 4wd prove to be a waste for me? Of course pro aspects are welcome too.
In addition to the above, the 4X4 has leaf springs on the front without any room so they bottom out a lot and the turning radius of the 4X4 is much greater than the 2X4 due to the front suspension.
Driving my X in any type of slick conditions is like piloting a HUGE ice cube on a frozen ice rink, you just can't do it. Put her in 4X4 and go wherever you want without any hesitation at all. What I am saying is a X w/o 4X4 is not worth much in slick conditions. Get the 4X4.
4x4 is not only good for icy conditions, which you get every now and then in Houston, but also for those torrential rainstorms that you get more frequently. When water is sheeting across Katy Freeway or anywhere on the Loop or SHT or anywhere around the city, for that matter, 4x4 is an excellent safety feature to have at your disposal, especially if you're towing anything at the time. It's saved my **** more than once, driving across the country in all climates from desert to farmland to mountain to sea. My advice is the same as for most things: if you're wondering if you should get it, YOU SHOULD GET IT. You won't regret it (oh, geez - that didn't rhyme, did it?).
I just traded my '00 V10 2wd on an '05 6.0L 2wd. I live in N. IL and have owned 4wd 3 trucks ago and feel I just don't need it. We tow a 31ft TT 5k-7k miles every yearI drive ON the road. I think the 2wd's ride better and drive better and have fewer maintenance concerns. I have limited slip on this one and the last one, and have never had a problem with traction in the snow or otherwise. If it gets a little slippery, SLOW DOWN. I feel that the auto manufacturers through their advertising have convinced us that everyone needs 4wd.
I do realize that some folks have the need for 4wd, but most 4wd's on the road are unnecesary. IMHO

Thanks for all the input. It was exactly what I was looking for and got me to thinking so I gave my criteria a second look. I ended up purchasing a 2wd 2002 Ex PSD w/ 56K from a private party. I was able to get the lowdown on the vehicles driving & maintenance history, which was a high priority for me.
I love my 2wd and will lower it soon with some 22's. In Phoenix I don't have any snow to contend with and it my X is just a giant family car.
Can't wait for it to handle quite a bit better.
Mike
I haven't had my 2WD V10 in the snow yet. But I can tell you I was surprised how well it did in the mud, even pulling a trailer. I went to an off-road race a few months back. To get to the pits we had to drive down a one lane dirt road and it had rained about 4 inches in the last 8 hours. The mud road was 2 deep ruts with some mild hills for almost a mile. I got onto the road saying "I should've got the 4WD model", but the Ex proved me wrong - it handled it without a problem and it never even considered getting stuck
It certainly isn't the weapon of choice for off-road or mud, but it did just fine! The worst part was the $10 I spent at the car wash trying to get all the mud washed off of it...
Next Time, Spray Pam Nonstick Cooking Spray On The Bottom Of The Truck Frame And All, Before You Go In The Mud. Then When You Wash It, It Will Come Clean Easier, And Faster. Sometimes When I Go Wheelin In My Ram2500, It Smells Like French Fries For The First Couple Of Miles Until The Pam Dries....believe It, It Works...
Hehe - actually I race off-road motorcycles and I use Pam on them for muddy races. When I spray it with Pam - Buttery flavor, everyone keeps walking by my pit looking to see who made popcorn!
I didn't realize we had to drive down a "dirt" road to get to the pits for that race, had I known I'd have had my buddy drive his Jeep instead of getting my Ex covered in mud!
good, finally someone else knows this trick. i keep telling all my other friends this one and they don't believe me. but at the same time, they cant figure out why it only takes me a little while to clean my truck off. Oh, and no mud stains on the underside either.. My trucks look like they have never seen 1 tire off of an unpaved road. and to all of them i say, HAHAHAHAHAHAH, WHO GETS THE LAST LAUGH NOW..
