newbie,
Has anyone had a experience....good or bad...with a Edge Evolution chip, for a 5.4 triton motor ???
My truck is a 2000 f250 superduty, supercab short box 5.4 auto...373 gears. When towing at 60 mph, it is turning about 1850 rpm ( 265 tires ).Looking for more low end torque, have installed flowmaster cat back and K&N filter.Trailer weight about 4500 lbs, tows well in 3 or drive, with od off....but its a little loud in the cab and hard on fuel.Looking for answers, other than a v10 or psd.
Don't mean to come off as rude, but isn't it loud in the cab because of the flowmasters? I'm not sure the chip will help the noise, perhaps I'm misreading it. Also, what're you getting for mileage while towing and when you're running empty?
The flowmaster single cat back is a little louder than stock, no question. My concern is mostly engine rpm, in 3rd the rpm is about 2500....doing 60 mph.If I was able to use overdrive, the rpm would be much lower and the mileage should increase.Yes 410s would probably be the right choice, but my mechanic told me the swap, would run close to 2,000.00.My mileage empty, not towing is 17 to 19 hwy ( imp gallons )
Looking for a lower price performance gain, than gears.Thought the chips might be the way to go !
My buddy, has a f350,v10 auto....gears unknown, and he gets 12 to 13 mpg, towing a boat about the same weight/size as mine. That bites, power and mileage.
Honestly, the cost to swap gears and only going to 4.10 is not gonna net you that much difference in noticeable power, especially for the money it runs. I would highly recommend that if you are gonna do the gears, go to 4.30's. You'll be much happier with it.
Don't be concerened too much with engine RPM in the 5.4. Towing you want it to be up over 2250. That is where your engine starts making enough torque to be effective. 3.73's an a V8 is really having to push to move that truck and the trailer. And mileage wise, you're not gonna use that much more gas, as you'rep putting the engine in a more useable power range and not making it hunt for gears.
You probably won't be all that impressed with a programmer for what you are wanting. Without a doubt, the best towing improvement you can make is gears.
2K is definitely steep. Gears and master install kits will run around $300 (2WD) / $600 (4WD) and install should run $300 - 500 per axle. Shop around for a goo price on these as you can get ripped. Example: My install for the ARB's and 4.56's on a 4x4 only cost me $1000 total and there is a lot more involved a/ the ARB's than just a gear swap. No, this doesn't include the pice of the parts, but labor for it all was 1K.
Well, if I keep the truck, my best option is the gears.Looking for a easy way out ! Question, would my rpm, at 60 mph and 430 gears, be about 15% higher, than 373 gears ?.With 430 gears, will the truck have a little more pep, from a standing start ?.
The crawl ratio, in the bush would be alot better, with 430....373 suck.
Gears and a chip..hmm, just bought the wife a new dinning room table.
Yeah, it made a huge difference but not where I thought. On level ground and unloaded, you hardly notice but when I tow or start from a stop on a steep hill, you can really feel it pull like an SOB now. I don't tow very heavy stuff, usually 8000-11000 lbs, but it does great. A whole lot better than the 3.73. It seems that the more I load it, the more I can feel the extra torque at the wheels. I can start in 2nd gear easily now, whereas with the 3.73, it was a stretch and required a lot of clutch slippage. The mileage went down 1 mpg overall. Not too bad considering the power increase. I used to get 14 short trip, 16 city and 20.5 hwy with the 3.73, now I get 13/15/19.5 MPG with the 4.30. It is also a lot more fun to drive with the 4.30's.
The gears themselves are expensive though. I got mine through Ford and paid $400 for the 10.5" rear axle. (I have a 2WD, so no D60 to swap.)
Glade to hear, your happy with the swap !. Looks like a no brainer, more power, better driveablity, with a small sacrafice in fuel costs.Should be great with, my camper and jet boat in tow.
The thing you have to understand with most mods is that they are RPM specific. Things like headers, exhaust, chips, tuners, etc, tend to put power in a specific location under specific circumstances. Each engine is deifferent in what and where it's power is effected. But gears increase torque over the entire range, everywhere and all conditions.
You can get the gears sets for less than $200 per set. Go to Randy's, Reider Racing, West Coast Dif, 4WP, etc. The gears should run between $150 - 200, the master install kits will run about the same, then the install is what you have to work out.
Sure would like the v10 under the hood.....but that's not in the cards at the present time. Today went fishing with my 1000 lb, jet boat trailer package, in tow.The slightest grade the tranny, drops down to 3, It drives me mad.If I get the rpm above 2000 its OK, but at 120 km hr, she is hard on fuel. With 430 gears and 265 tires, I believe my rpm should be 2135 in OD, at 65.25 mph or 105 km. The torque really kicks in above 2000 to 2500 rpm, so the 430 look like they will do the job.
Talked to my mechanic, yesterday....he said the install cost for both axles is $800.00, plus the gear assembly, another 800.00 cdn.
Sure hope it wakes the engine up ! My mechanic seems to think I should buy a diesel.
