What is this?

Can someone please tell me what this is? I have a '98 Ford Ranger V6, 4.0L and whatever this is, it's leaking causing some heat and smell, obviously.:-) Any suggestions on what I need to do and/or replace? Thanks so much, I appreciate the time.

Welcome to FTE!

That's a "water diverter valve", more commonly known as the "heater control valve". It works to shut off the coolant to the heater core when the A/C is in "MAX" mode. It should be easy to replace, a couple of heater hose clamps and that's it. In fact, make sure it isn't just a hose connection that's leaking.

As the first post indicated, that is a coolant diverter valve. The seal on the shaft pivot wears over time and eventually lets coolant past. When I went to replace mine this spring my local dealer even had one in stock, that should tell you how commonly they need to be replaced. It's not really that bad, mine lasted 8 years and 60,000 miles. A couple of things to note if you plan to do the fix yourself: Make sure the engine is cold and drain the cooling system before you disconnect the hoses, a bath in scalding sticky coolant would not be a fun thing. Also take careful note of which hose goes on which fitting (there should be four). A Chilton or Haynes manual is a very worthwhile purchase if you plan to do any work yourself.
*Note - be very careful how you store the coolant when you have it out of the engine. Because it smells and tastes very sweet, pets love it, but as little as a teaspoon of it can kill a cat or small dog.

Thankyou so much for your help. So I basically need to replace that whole part, right? Or was it jus the seal you were talking about. Kragen, Autozone? I greatly appreciate your reply.

Have you fixed this yet? Was it easy? Is it a do-it-yourself job, or is it easier to take to a mechanic (if under 150 bucks...CDN money)

Mines been leakin on and off for some time...but I'm tired of the smoke and smell when it does. Its scary looking. I always think its REALLY bad.

Start with cool truck, clamp off the hoses, remove bad valve, install good valve and your done.

if you want to save a few bucks you can pull the valve out and put in a small piece of pipe and plug the vacuum hose. my 78' silverado doesn't have a control valve, it just flows all the time none of them came with one. Theres no problems with the A/C being cold either, it's got a R134 conversion and blows 32 degrees.
