I have seen a few diesels that are running around pouring blake smoke out the tailpipe. How do they do that? Can I do it (is it more than exhaust)? What are the downsides to it? Looks great and sounds like a jet engine going down the road...
They more then likely… have a tuner in them, which richens the fuel mixture and produces more then usual smoke……. and more then usual smiles on the driver of the truck….which results in frowns from those trying to catch the truck in front of them, ...did I mention the guy driving the Ford that has a smile from all the HP the tuner is supplying....hope that rambling helps...buy one you will love it!
there are actually programs that give better economy, but it also boosts hp and tq. with it being so fun to drive people tend to loose milage because they seem to grow a much heavier right foot. And yes they are available for 7.3. My brother has a superchips on his 7.3.....Black smoke combined with turbo back exhaust. WOW!!! I wish mine had it already.....
It is actually easier to smoke in a 7.3 as they do not have the VGT turbo. The smoke results from having more fuel then air to burn it. So you can usually assume that a smoker is chipped or has a tuner. I have also been told that if you clog up the intake (have even heard of guys putting WalMart bags around the filter) it will smoke more. I personally wouldn't try that but some people will.
Basically, when a diesel smokes under heavy acceleration, it is scorching fuel...it is burning off fuel that it can not turn into energy. So, you want smoke, U waste fuel. Why would U want to A) waste fuel, and B) **** off some environmentalist who has already given us the EGR valve/computer problems. I remember the good old days...with my VW Rabbit diesel pickup... or my Olds 350 Cutlass Diesel (the last block was the best ever), or my Chevy Impala Diesel. No EGR valves, no computers...just a motor that used the fuel. That Olds was the best ever. It would pass them all. I had to give it away to get rid of it...it would not die!
my 7.3 will smoke at will. i have done "alot" of stuff to it, check my gallery. it doesnt look like it will from outside though. just the big exhaust tip hanging out. the lie-o-meter reads 19.7 mpg. that is with a fairly-heavy foot, too. before i added the edge system, i was getting 15.7 with the intake and MBRP 4''.
it just floods the engine with raw diesel.. i got the superchip and its awesome..those idiots that love to tailgate, just sit there pumpin the gas and watchin those idiots swerve all other the road to avoid it..lol and hit damn punks on the side of the road in the city
We use to think that smoking cigarettes was cool too.... Now we know better..at least some of us do...
Many people that adjust/modify their engine to the point of excessive pollution, and fuel usage for power or noise is usually lacking in one or more of the following:
1) Low self confidence in relationships, society, or work.
2) Maturity.
3) Education.
4) Compassion.
5) Sexual dysfunction.
An excellent study was conducted by a Midwest University, on how individuals with low self esteem, resulting from the above list, would manifest their self into something they could control and enhance, in order to improve their self image. A modified truck was used as an example in the study.
To clarify the above statement, not everyone who modifies their truck to the extent of “black smoke or noise” falls into the above listed categories IF they require the additional power for work, or for a particular off-the-street task, like a truck show as an example. However, when you see someone driving a vehicle that is modified beyond reason, and is polluting the environment with smoke and/or noise, take this list and observe the driver/owner. I’m sure you can pick one of the five that fits his/her profile.
If the SD is required for a task that a lesser tool (truck) is unable to perform, then no. Items that we purchase are a reflection of our "self image", or an image that we wish for. For some, money is the limiting factor for such image reflection/projection. For others it’s logic.
I have the SCMT but it's rare for my truck to make much smoke when I take off.
Not sure why that is but I think that it may be because I only feed in throttle as fast as the truck seems ready to take it, or to the point where I'm loosing traction.
If I need a really good launch away from a light, I put it in 4HI and power brake to 1800 - 2000 RPM and away I go - sans smoke, or at least with no big cloud of it.
I think that I just mashed the throttle to the floor while stopped at at idle, I'd probabably get the smoke too, but personally I don't care for it.
