The difference between the two ring gears in FE's

Here's a pic of a '67 flywheel, with a (what) year ring gear laying on top.

One is the 184(?) tooth and the other is the 150+ tooth... (154? 157? I can't remember - I could count them, but why?)

They are the two types used between FE's and FT's, and earlier FE's had the lower tooth count too.

After going through the pains of figuring out which one was the one I wanted, I fully intended to explain this to as many people as possible. This was 5 or more years ago.

Guess what? You people are the lucky ones

Everyone chime in - what are we looking at, and what years do they apply to?

I'm hoping to put together a consensus, because the last time this was discussed (as far as I know) there was some lingering doubt.

Well the way I've always understood it was 58-64 used the 153 tooth and 65 and later the 184 tooth. This also applies to the type of starter your using. The early "folo thru" type which is longer and uses a early bellhousing and then the later shorter nose style starter for the 184 T. There is a conversion to adapt a early starter gear to a later starter for the 153 T flywheel. Maybe I'm wrong but this is the way it's always worked for me on cars......G.

I believe the FT used the 154 tooth?

Which is probably why I had a 360 with a counter-weighted flywheel with that 154 tooth ring gear on it (yes, that's where that ring gear came from, that 360 that was EXTERNALLY balanced). I think that thing had a 361FT crank that had the snout turned down.

Doubt it

Art, there are two styles ( at least ) for the FE, the 157 (?) and the 184. But I doubt you had an FT 'wheel. Early FEs had a pull on bendix gear, later ones had a push style. I think that is when the ring gear tooth changed. But the FTs, at least the later ones, (my stuff was from a '76 ) had a larger diameter flywheel, it was about 1 1/4 thick and weighed 45lbs +. Yes, it had a counterweight cast into it. It was drilled for a 13 inch clutch only. I would really be surprized to find one on anything but an FT. My '68 390 F250 had a 'wheel that weighed 28#. Even if you have a 360 or a390 with a counterweighted 'wheel, look it over carefully, sometimes there will be a few holes drilled opposite the weight and it really does have a nuetral balance. But keep in mind alot of our FEs are 40 yrs old or more, and God only knows what happened to it before we got it. DF, @ his work, on his boss' computer
