I have a chipper with a 1985 ford industral 6 with a
point distributor . The dist. is junk I checked with NAPA
and they did not have a listing for the ## that were on the
dist. tage. They will have one in the am for a 300 with
points 1968 --- 70's best they could do. Any differences
I should look for with this engine and any other places
to get a distributor fast.
That distributor should work for you. You can just forget about the vacuum advance (which I assume your indust. 300 does not have). That distributor will have a mechanical advance as well, which I am not sure that you need.
Do you know, did the orginal dizzy have mech and/or vacuum advance? You can tell about the mech advance by trying to "twist" the shaft of the dizzy. If you can twist it in one direction by about 15 degrees, and the shaft looks like a "C" on the end as opposed to a "D" then its probably a mech advance dizzy.
I hope someone with more experience than I will chime in. I am not personally aquainted with industrial sixes, but I seem to recall that you would set them up with a pretty much fixed advance, as they run all day at a set speed anyhow. But maybe a vacuum advance would be a good idea, as it would retard the engine when it bogs down, as opposed to a fixed timing, which could mean trouble.
I think you can get it to work -- it will fit for sure, but there is a question of how to set the timing.
It has both mechanical and vac advance , not sure if this is the original
dist but I will guess that it is . The shaft for the oil pump is 5/16 is that
size for any 300 ?
That will fit any 300 that I know. If it has both vac and mech advance, then the 68-70 dizzy from Napa should be the right one. Beats me how the timeing should be set, but maybe your book will say. A basic "Thermactor Distributor" from Napa should be NAPA #NRD482610. The thermactor polution pump came on the scene at the same time that the older "loadomatic" distributor went away. Thus the vac and mech advance dizzies are known as "thermactor" distributors, even though the distributor has nothing to do with the polution controls (which I am sure your chipper does not have).
Keep in mind that the timeing marks are notoriously incorrect and/or slipped on 300s. So if you are really getting flusterated, check out where top dead center is to verify the timeing.
Got it running but now it has a knock ,it back fired two times
when it quit running . Thinking that a piece of carbon is on a piston
and hitting the head??? If so what is a good brand of top engine
carbon cleaner and where do I find it ? It distroyed the dist when
one of the advance weights post broke stopping the top parts of
the dist moving .
I would suggest a new thread (post your last ?? again as a new one). I am totally clueless and the danger is that no one WITH a clue will read the thread, since its getting "worn-out". I think some guys dump in "sea foam", but DON'T DO THAT just cause I said so!!!
