Cparks,
Did you get kissed behind the ear?
I do my own changes and it costs me $41.00, that's 15 qts of MC 15w40 @ 1.42/qt and $19 for the MC filter. I have a Fumoto valve and yes my engine takes the entire 15 quarts.
I was at my local Wal-Mart today and they did have the 15W40 Motorcraft in stock and also had new AutoLite oil filters which are made by and/or owned by Fram. I pulled the filter out and it looks identical to the Motorcraft, saying Made in Germany. The price is only $14 and some change. Sounds like a deal to me.
I also watched the dealer change the oil today. They did everything right.
But the 15 quarts vs. 13.5 quart argument has got me confused. I watched 15 quarts put in; the dipstick pulled and read dead on the middle. Tech said he's always put in 15 and it almost always reads very close to the middle.
I asked if they had synthetic and he said, "the Motocraft 15W40 is part synthetic."
I also had the air filter changed (20K miles) and I believe it could have gone another 5 to 10K miles, but ... I read FTE and 20K was the most common advice here.
Price was $59 for the oil change and $69 plus $5 labor for the air filter.

I am surprised how many people say that their dealer thinks that Motorcraft 15W-40 is part synthetic. Back in 2003, my dealer said the same thing. I have checked the web, read the bottles and watched many people post the very same thing... I just wonder where and how the dealers think that it is part synth... unless it is and this is some secret formulation that they just don't promote... but if it is... why not promote it???
I have to wonder how many of you guys that can't put 15qts of oil in your trucks are checking it while the truck is not level. Mine always takes 15qts like the book says. Maybe it's all that fuel in the oil that's making it read high..

The diesel fuel leaking into the oil was an issue with early 6.0L motors and the older style C94 injectors (now using C95 injectors). I would be more inclined to think that it is manufacturing problems withe the oil fill tube and or tip stick and people getting different readings and Ford just issuing a TSB for "middle of the hash mark" is OK... and this eliminates all problems.
Every oil change since day one has taken 15 qts with a complete drain and oil filter change. I have watched the shop at 14, and be below the top of the hash marks... so I let them add the final 15th qt. I have never had a romping issue, foaming or any oil releated issue so far (58,000 miles on my 2003 Excursion).
I am not saying that some or many have not had luck with less oil and reduced rough idle/romping... but like the post above... I wonder too???
I did have the romping issues in my early 03. The oil level on the dipstick was always too high to get any accurate reading. I let my oil drain until it drips very slowly, takes about 30 minutes on a slightly warm motor. My driveway is level. I put in 13 qts, and the filter, warm the motor to normal operating temperature, and let it sit overnight. I check the level before starting the next morning. Dead center between the XXXXX every time. It is slightly higher if I don't let it sit overnight. Maybe it's my dipstick. Don't know for sure, but it runs great as is. Getting 19mpg with synthetic Rotella and fuel additive. 37,000+ now. No problems since initial #8 injector failure(c94) and Oct 03 flash.

The first time I changed the oil I put in 13.5 and it was low, so I added another quart to bring it up to the full mark, so 14.5 to 15 should be right on the money.
I'm with you guydiver12. I did my change last night and put 13 quarts in. I had an extra quart for the 1/2 that I thought I'd need, but I just couldn't do it. I must have checked the dipstick 5 times wondering if it was just picking up oil off the tube... I really don't think it was. I just hit 4,000 miles yesterday and I'm starting to run Rotella T syn now.
from kendall they probaly are getting it in the bulk tanker. At work the have a 1000 gallon drum and pump it from there. They get a really good deal on it. No containers, big drop for their bulk truck = $ saved.
