I had my first oil change done at the dealer (Varsity Ford, Ann Arbor, MI) last week. On my 7.3 I always did it myself, but the truck was in for some service and I asked about it. They quoted me $90.00 to change the oil and I was waiting a minute to decide and the service writer said that included Synthetic Oil. He said that is all they use. I told them to go ahead. I picked up the truck and when I arrived home and looked at the paperwork it showed Motorcraft 15W40 which is the same oil I used in the 7.3. I called them and they now say the Motorcraft oil is a synthetic blend. Has anyone heard this? Is it BS, because it is my first time hearing it.
I thought Motorcraft was dino, but maybe they make both. My dealer change my first oil change and used Motorcraft and said that if I was paying it would be 68.60 for oil, filter, & labor. I use Delo 15w40 with the fumoto valve and change my own. These 6.0 are the easiest to service.
went to www.motorcraft.com web site and looked under oil and they only have dino for diesels listed ( 15w40 & 10w30). The syn is a 5w20 or 5w30 but not listed as a diesel oil.
Check your oil level as well. The manual says add 15 quarts but 13.5 quarts brings the oil level up to the middle of the hash marks. There has been much discussion on this site regarding this issue.
Not only is it not synthetic, its not even CI-4 Plus rated (per their website and looking at a bottle of it on my local wally world shelf).
Motorcraft is CI4+ rated, but what your seeing is old bottles that got mis-rotated in distribution. I have used Motorcraft for sometime and always CI4+ rated!!
My local farm supply storte had both on the shelf and I had to search for 15 qts of the CI4+ rated stuff to do my oil change.
Buyer beware... but always read the lables for any oil purchased (any brand that is).

You are correct... Motorcraft 15W-40 is a dino oil made by Connoco. It is a good oil and I have used it since new until 55,000 miles with zero problems and good oil analysis reports.
I am switching to Rotella T Synth. 5W-40 for the benefits of cold weather operation and increased heat resistance. I change oil & filter every 5,000 miles and onlyuse CI4+ rated oil (Motorcraft is one of them... if they have the new bottles which my dealer has had for some time).
I would go back and speak to the Service Writer/Manager and try to get them to give you a big discount or free oil change in 5,000 miles for the mis-representation of their service (and oil)... bad PR at the worst case.
I would be prone to beliving I was just reading old bottle lables at my local wally world but I don't see where they list it as CI4+ on their website either?
Here's the verbiage from their website on the 15-40 product (cut and paste, no editing from me):

I tend to believe what is on bottles and not websites. False info on websites happens and does not violate consumer protection laws... but false claims on actual products does.. and I know for a fact that CI4+ rated Motorcraft is being sold, just check all bottles before you buy.
It was Jon. Great guy, I will buy my next truck there also. As far as the oil goes, I think they said this to get me over the $90.00 shock. I am going to look into this further. I believe what everyone is saying, it is regular Dino oil. I think it is good oil, as I have use many quarts in my life. Good lesson learned though.
"Believe 50% (or less) of what people tell you and 100% of what you see."
Dealers (good and bad) say things to sell product or services and it's all about the "all mighty dollar". We want to trust them, but all of us can tell stories of catching our respective dealers in lies, half-truths and just plain dumb mistakes.
When getting my oil changed, I watch the whole process and ensure that the oil filter is loosened on my 6.0L diesel (per manual), oil drained, and the right viscosity and rating of oil is used... period!!!
I too watch the whole process...

As to the thread topic: MC is decent conventional oil IMO and supposedly has good anti-foaming properties specifically recommended by FMC- I've heard stories where MC oil has cured "driveability" issues caused by other oils... But they are just that: Stories
I used the Motorcraft CI4 when it was readily available at Wally World, but then they stopped carrying it. So I went to Rotella. Then I changed to Rotella syn because I can change it myself for under 50 bucks. I too got the dealer shaft for 82 bucks, and too much oil in the pan. Had to drain a quart to get it back on the dipstick. Mine only holds 13. The local oil change place got on my bad side trying to put 15 in, because they said"that's what the manual calls for". I also had to make them go back under the truck and pull the drain plug again, because they put it back in before taking the oil filter cap off. So I got way too much oil in my truck, had to take out over two quarts when I got home. Now I go to the pros, do it myself.
