I have a 97 F-150 4.2 5-Speed. Currently at 207,000 miles. I have the timing cover leak -- have since new I guess (too little at that time to be noticeable). I do my own maintenance (10w-40 PZ every 5-10,000 miles). Most of the maintenance and replacements I have done, I only did because of miles. I live in Atlanta so like half miles very stop and go and half highway when I travel.
Front pads lasted 100,000 and there was still pad on them. Rear shoes wore out the drums at about 150,000. They do not adjust correctly which I believe is a design flaw. Replaced heater plenum "motor" and heater-fan motor. Starter went bad around 150,000. Replaced front bearings and rotors just because of mileage. Needs a new headliner. I finally got around to replaceing the rear sliding (leaking) window with a solid window from a junkyard. I believe this was also a design flaw. I am on third set of plug wires. Third gear is kind of odd sometimes when shifting into it (been that way for a long time), but nothing I have done anything about. Check engine light came on for first time about two weeks ago. Bushings were out on both IMRC Actuators. I keep waiting for the thing to give up so I can take advantage of the "giveaways" -- but it keeps rolling along. I figure that ought to make it blow up now
2000 super cab with 109,000 miles bought six months ago with 108,000 miles have replaced all sensors and airbad suplement, rear speed abs sensor all shocks, tires all brakes around, full tune up, all fluids, fixed odometer problem. seems that every thing taked about on this fourm my truck develops the problem and I have to fix. Not to happy with the truck as of yet. Don't even drive it unless I have to it breaks every time I do. still working it though.
1998 F-150 4x4 , 5.4L V-8, 103700 miles i have had it for 4 years.
Other than routine maintenance (oil change every 3000) i have had to do the following:
at 98000 replaced the sparkplugs
at 102000 replace the shocks
at 103000 replaced the left front hub bearing assembly
all the ball joints need to be replaced which is the next thing i will do.
The only other problem i have is that the #5 fuse keeps blowing every so often
and i cant figure that one out. it controls the A/c , and cruise control . Guess I will have to bring it to a pro.
Kobe, you need to go out to your truck and unplug you brake pressure switch found on the front of the master cylinder. There is a recall on this currently out. It is a deactivation switch for the cruise control and the brake fluid ruptures the diaphragm and shorts out the switch causing either a fuse to blow or the truck to catch fire. The truck has a potential to catch fire even when it is off cause the line is always hot. ASAP go and unplug that thing before your truck becomes an insurance claim!!! You can read a little more about it here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...cruise+control

my 2000 has about 82K on it. the PO really took great care of it. I have been making sure all of the sceduled mainteance is done it. Everything is still intact, and the only problem that I have had so far was the multifunction switch. I took apart and cleaned it, now it works like a champ! I think i can get another 80 to 100k out of it easy!
Thanks bigdaddyII!!!!!!
i got it done , thank god for this site or i would have never known.
the sad thing is , I took it down to a ford dealership about 6 weeks ago and explained the problem with the fuse, they didnt even mention the recall or even check the deactivation switch. They just told me that they didnt have time to look at it and , the mgr said that someone else could probably cheaper anyway and sent me on my way. I would think that they would have said something?? geez, this could have killed me, or burned my house down!!
again , thanks
I have 1998 Ford F-150 XLT Crew Cab 4.6 motor and it Has on it 193,000 miles and still doses the job. I own a hot shot delivery service and pull a load (5000-6000 lbs) trailer all the time. The only majior thing that had to be replace was the back half of the frame in december 2004. It broke right above the axle.
Ive got a '99 F-150 reg cab 8' bed 4x4 Off-Road with 128,000 miles on it. It drips a little oil between the head and block on the passenger side, but it still pulls 18 mpg doing 70 mph on the highway, so Im not worried about the motor.
Octane
My '97 F150 XLT 4X4 Supercab is showing 254k+ with everything under the hood ORIGINAL except plug wires, starter, and coils. I also replaced the ball joints and control arms, and I think the PO changed out the rotors.
I've thought of selling it to get a vehicle with less miles, but resale for it with all those miles is like zilch, it's in exceptional condition, and purrs like a kitten. I would be a moron to get rid of it.
It is nice to know that you can still get that kind of mileage on these newer trucks. I have an '02 with 92k on it and I have been thinking as to just how long it will last. My last had almost 200k when she went bye bye and the only thing it needed was 1 alternator and 1 set of ball joints.
When your 200k truck went bye bye, how did it fail? Was it repairable? I've often wondered what the failure mode will be on mine, if it will be catastrophic (internal damage), or if it will just be a slow deterioration, like oil consumption, w-pump, PS pump, radiator, etc all going at once, etc.
Actually it was running great. I bought the F150, and took the ol Bronco in for a restoration. After stripping her down to frame, there were alot of frame cracks. I couldn't find a decent replacement frame within the first 4 I looked at so I sold off the rest of her to make up for some of the $$ i had already paid for the initial tear down.
As for the engine, tranny and drivetrain. Didn't have a prob. Just one minor leak from the tranny pan. That came from misjudging the height of a couple of rocks.
1997 F150 4x4 Flareside, 133,000 miles . Pretty much done alot to it , plugs , alternator, suspension parts, oil and filter changes, Ide have to say though that its been a very good truck to me. Only real serious problem ive ever had with it is when i but an electronic b&m shift kit on it. I spliced the wires into the computer wires per stated directions. All worked fine until the truck ended up not starting on me a few times . Ide go back to it the next day and it would start. After 2 dealers and 3 repair shops i finally figured out the problem on my own. If i tried to change the B&M shift switch anytime i was driving or with the truck running it would throw of the computer and cuase it to not start(this drove me crazy for a while till i figured it out.lol) Other than what ive done to jinx the truck.lol Its been awesome. Ide buy another one. But heres the best part i think about my truck
ITS PAYED FOR!!!!!!!!!!!! NO MORE DETROIT LOAN!!!!!!!! EYYUPPPEEEE!!!!!!!
