space between bellhousing and engine

space between bellhousing and engine
just switched out 400 to 460 but couldn't get the tranny to bolt up tight, truck is 78f250 4x4, kept original tranny, should it bolt up tight or should there be a gap, think it's about a 1/4 inch,put in 1/2 inch spacer to be safe but don't think the clutch is engaging like it should. Any advice???
