Fuel Gauge problems???

I'm have problems with my fuel gauge on my 2002 Super Duty (40k miles), It sticks at just below 1/2 a tank, no matter how full the tank is. It happens at start up, and will eventually go to the correct reading after 15-20 minutes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Jim

Its normal ,we have had it do it on a lot guys trucks.
Their is a electronic dampening in the cluster module to prevent high an low spikes
If it never recovers then you have a problem

Fuel Guage Problem on my 2002 Ford Superduty 5.4L

Hi guys,

Was reading this post about the fuel gauge. I have a 2002 F-250 Superduty, 33,000 miles, fuel guage stopped working and now sits below the E even when the tank is full. Is this a common problem? Can you explain about this cluster module problem and spiking? Could my truck have this problem? I checked all wires to the fuel tank and they appear to be intact. Any help would be appreciated.

cytex, you have a bad instrument cluster/wiring or a bad sending unit in the fuel tank.
What we are talking about above is the instrument cluster has a electronic dampening device that slows the reaction time of the fuel guage when filling tank.

without you having schematics
you can do a resistance test on the sending unit
When the tank is full the sending unit should measure 145 ohms
There is a connector at the tank I will see if I have the test points around here.

I have an '02 HD F-250 4x4 and my fuel gauge decided the other day to stop working. I doubt it's the sending unit since the computer is still accurate in how many miles I have till empty and fuel milage still works... It's just the gauge that took a dumper... I know I've got trouble with my VSM but most likely not related... Also, my engine temp gauge has never gotten up past the cold mark... If it has, I'd say no more than luke warm... Definitely not normal middle of the gauge action here... So, instrument cluster?
