Fuel gauge not working

I have a 67 long bed with dual tanks The fuel gauge does not work for either tank I cant remember if when you ground out the sending unit and it moves the gauge is the gauge good or the sending unit good Also is there a way to check the switch on the dash to see if that is my problem. Thanks I,m new to the board and also a new owner of this truck.

if you can ground the plate on the sending unit, and the guage works then the guage and sending unit are both good. you will need a ground from the cab to the sender. it is usually from right above the sender on the back of the cab, to a tab on the sender. the ground is the most common problem with the fuel guage in these older trucks. people unhook them and then forget to hook them back up.

if both tanks have guages, and the switch is wired correctly and has the right amount of poles, you should be able to use both senders.

lets see, that would be a double pole double throw 2 position switch.

Actually you only need a single pole double throw switch. Each sender goes to a throw and the pole is the output to the gauge.

The factory switch is a DPDT but they only use 1/2 of the switch so there is an extra SPDT not being used. There are three black wires connected to that unused 1/2 of the switch but the wires terminate in the wire loom.

Ok I tried to ground the sending unit and the needle moved so then I took the sending unit out of the tank and moved the float by hand the gauge worked so I am going to put everything back together and put about 5 gals in to see if it works I didnt try the tank under the truck it has a skid plate on and I ran out of time

this may sound silly, but my '69 f1oo has a "going bad" ign switch. the truck will fire and run fine, but the blinkers and gauges on the dash dont work- wiggle the key a tad in the starting direction and the gauges come to life along with the blinkers

BB,
Thanks for the info about the gas guage switch. I have that set-up in my truck and it has always confused me because the wiring diagram shows only some of the wires that are actually on the switch. I never followed the others through the loom to see that they were terminated there.

You're welcome Carl! I always wondered what the extra wires were for and curiosity got the best of me one Sunday afternoon.

Why the extra wires? Don't know. Maybe the molded connector only came that way with a wire for every contact. Or maybe Ford had plans for a solenoid valve for the tanks but it never happened. Whatever, there's an extra switch in there that's not being used.

have you checked the float to see if it had gas in it, because that will cause it to sit at the bottom, which will cause it not to read.
