Fuel gauge

When I bought my 93 F350 (7.3) the owner declared a problem with the rear fuel tank, and said he never used it. There is no evidence of a leak (plastic tank). I removed the sending unit and found a little fuel inside, and no obvious debris. When I flip the tank switch from front to rear, the gauge goes all the way to full +, indicating a malfunction. I'd like to use the rear tank, but do not want to add fuel until problems are fixed. How do I troubleshoot the sending unit or gauge. All functions with the front tank are in good working order.

Then you already solved it, replace the rear unit and be done. I believe pump and sending unit are one, either way just replace them and be done with it.
