What exactly was a camper special. Where they all 2wd ext.cab long box trucks? Where they all 2wd? I had a friend ask me the other day and i wasnt sure.
My understanding of the ford camper special was that they all where 2wd long box ext. cab trucks with heavy suspension made for hauling those box campers. Did they all come with a 460? Thats what i thought. Just wondering.
we have a 74 f350 super camper special we use to haul our pulling truck around.it came factory with a 460,c-6 tranny,2wd,a/c,hd cooling for engine and tranny,frt&rear sway bars,Ranger option package and a regular cab[not extended]with a 140+" WB.i have seen an f-250 camper special with a similar suspension only it had a 390 4-speed.one of the guys we pull with says they made a 4wd option but i have never seen one.
I have a friend that has a 78 F250 4x4 camper special. Its a custom with a 400 and a np 435 stripped out except it has dual tanks. I'm not sure how heavy duty the springs were cause its now lifted but the tag on the door says is 8400 GVW. Thats about all i know about his truck.
I know the '67-'72 Camper Specials came with Dana 60 limited slip rear ends and would expect '73-'79's got something similar. Worth a few extra bucks in my opinion.
I've got a 78 F250 XLT Ranger 4x4 Camper Special with a 400/automatic. Near as I can tell, it has all the things listed in the above post by Dennis. It also has dual tanks.
By the way, if anyone knows where to find replacement camper special emblems, let me know. I'm missing one and the other is pretty faded out. I've tried LMC, Dennis Carpenter, Motor Haven, eBay, and a couple others I can't remember... nobody has them for a 78. They are mounted on the front fenders in front of the wheels.
I've got a 78 2wd camper special as well. Came with dual tanks, dual batteries, C6, 400 V8, trailer mirrors, overload leaf in spring pack, front and rear sway bars, 9.50-16.5 tires and dana 60 limited slip rear. Seems like alot of them came with two tone paint as well. I am also having the exact same problem finding the embelem for the other front fender. Have the one on the driver side but not on the pass. side. Unless they only came with one embelem (?).
That is funny, mine is missing the driver side emblem too. I'm pretty sure it came with them on both sides, since I've got two small holes in the fender where the emblem used to be. My truck also has the original two tone green paint.
in 1990 i bought a early (round headlights)78 f-250 supercab 4x4 that was a camper special. it had 400/C6 np205 front and rear swaybars 9 or 10 leafs in the rear 3 in the front. swing out mirror's "camper special" on front fenders and tailgate. HUGE radiator high output alt, dual tanks,dual batt, 3 inch wide rear brake shoe's it was a custom with no molding or a/c. sold that because it was rusted out very bad. in 1997 bought a late (rectangular headlights) 78 "trailer special" f-250 supercab 4x4 the only difference was the trailer special was a ranger with 2 tone paint "trailer special" on front fenders and it had 2 1/2 inch rear shoe's and a smaller radiator eveything else was the same. sold that moved to AZ and got another one thats a Ranger XLT with HUGE radiator,dual batt,high output alt, dual tanks,toolbox in bed,sway bars front and back,tilt wheel with cruz control,a/c,heavy duty front bumper with a 9000# mile marker winch, high back buckets from a bronco with console, fold down back seat,factory bed cap,and it's rust free. LOVE THOSE SUPERCABS
I was at the wreckers this morning and there was a 77 Camper Special there so I grabbed the emblem.If anyone wants it email me at ifergusson@sprint.ca and I will send you a picture.I only have one so first one gets it.Thanks
any body know where i can get rustfree supercabi have two but they are both rusted out pretty bad behind the doors along the bottomone is a 1976 390 a/c auto cruise control. the other is 1977 150 ranger 351m auto a/c or can a good body shop fix them? the cab mounts seem to be in good shape.any help or info would be appreciated
