Last weekend, I drained & refilled the radiator on my wife's '97 Expedition 4.6L. Before I started, I got underneath & searched high & low for the engine block drains. I found one on the driver's side, but nothing on the passenger's side. Does a '97 Expedition 4.6L have an engine block drain plug on the passenger's side?
If I just use the one on the driver's side, how much coolant am I leaving in on the passengers side?
Passengers side is tough because the starter is in the way. Not sure how much you leave in but draining the drivers side should tell you since they should be about the same. I usually just point the front of the engine downhill and then drain through the radiator letting gravity do its work. By flushing with distilled water about three times after I have flushed with tap water and then completely draining and putting in new coolant to 50% and then topping off with distilled water works well.
Thanks for the info. As far as flushing goes, I never do it. I just drain the system & re-fill with 50/50 coolant/distilled water. This has always worked for me on all the vehicles I've owned. Others say I'm wasting my time by not flushing. Oh well, I'll stick with what works for me. Seeing as how most folks never even check to see if they have any coolant in their car, I think the way I do it is just fine.
