The shop manual said to use a meter on the 2.5 volt range on the leads (unpluged and probably a analog meter). If the meter oscillates with the engine cranking, the distributor is ok. Also, the resistence must be between 400 to 800 ohms. I put an oscilloscope on one and I think I had about 3v peak to peak ac.
I am getting the right resistance (about 624 ohms). But I am only getting about .8 peak volts. Would this be enough to give my engine a little spark or is this why I have no spark at all??
I am using a Fluke 77 series II multimeter...the ac voltage setting.
The resistance from orange to purple is correct...but my chilton says that when I measure it from purple to ground or orange to ground there should be 70,000 or more ohms. But I get no resistance.
I have ran all these tests multiple times. And everything else checks out ok... 13.8v coming from battery into coil and 6.8v coming from ignition module. And I am running a plug wire (that I know is good)directly from the coil.
I have no clue on what is wrong...ANY help/advice/suggestion wanted!!!
Do you mean no resistance as in "0" or as in you cant measure any resistance??
"0" is bad wire grounded, or short as so many people like to call it
Cant measure any resistance is good as that is way over 70,000 ohms.
Yeah, your Fluke is seeing an open, resistence is too high to measure, which is good. Your voltage of .8 on the Fluke would be 1.131 peak or 2.262 peak to peak which is about what I saw on a oscilloscope.
The 3rd wire going into the distributor is the system ground. I would check it to make sure it is really grounded.
