Fuel heater

I have a 1996 F-350 PSD. In the bottom of the fuel filter bowl there is a wire heater. It looks like it is loose. Can I just take it out? I don't want to confuse the computer.

Yes, it can be disconnected without any ill effects to the PCM.

If it shorts out it will blow one of your under hood fuses and the engine will crank and crank but never start. You can replace this heater element with the better newer design but you will need to slightly modify the fuel bowl in order to do this.

What does that little heater do in there? I am converting to WVO and need to heat the fuel anyway. Will this do it or can it be varied hotter or colder?

I was planning to add a heat exchanger to the fuel line.

Sorry, it won't. You are going to have to keep the WVO fluid in the "non-summer" temps warm;so you can pump it. A heater is a heater......I agree. But you've got to pump that thick stuff up to it.........and that just isn't going to happen without some outside help. I've read that people are putting a "T" in their heater hose, and running it back to some copper tubing in the bottom of an auxillery tank. They keep everything flowing that way. Hope this helps.

none adjustable, it is a fixed resistance, it doesn't have that high of an output anyway, just enough to keep the fuel above gelling.

Go with the inline heat exchanger. work alot better for the WVO.
