whats up? i've got a sqweel? noise coming from the front end. its been doing this on and off forever now. i've changed the belt twice and the idler-pulley once but its still doing it especially with temperature changes, rainy weather, car washes, etc. a buddy of mine suggested belt dressing, any other suggestions? otherwise its goin to ford!
I recently had to replace the alternator on the 3.0L in my Taurus, and the replacement unit squeaks, especially at startup. It has a lifetime warranty so when I get some time it's going back and I'm getting another. But the point is, the pulleys on the alternator (and A/C condensor) can also squeak.
In addition, the camshaft position synchronizer shaft assembly can also make a squeaking noise:
thanks guys for your replies. these are all things that could be intermittent? take this into consideration please, while i'm on the throttle their is'nt a sound ever and sometimes their is never a sound even when i'm at a stop but it comes back during certain situations or occasions. for instance, ill be driving along, no noise but if i take my foot off the gas and i'm coasting the noise starts and is louder at times than others this is why i thought it was the idler.
if you have replaced the belt and the tensioner i would suspect that the tentioner is working loose, did you use the bolt that came with it? if there is a little "slack" in the belt the sound would get worse as the rpms drop. i am sure it does it while driving, just not as evident due to road noise and engine noise. if if the sound got louder with higer rpms i would suspect one of the pullyies. check the tightnes and play in the tensioner with the belt removed. even an small amount of play would cause the belt to "slip"
well thanks again guys. i thought i would try the belt dressing first and it worked, kinda. the noise went to different pulleys, i'd spray it in one area and it would stop then it would start in a different pulley until i sprayed the belt dressing on every pulley and got the inside of the belt really good. finally no more squeak until it rained then it came back so i pulled out the can of dressing and only used a small amount and it was fine. if it continues i'll be forced to look into the things you guys have menchoned because i can't staaand squeaks!
I have the same problem with my truck. I have a 99 ranger with a 3.0L I replaced the idler pulley first and the sqeak went away and came back a day later. Then I replaced my belt about 3 days ago. And I swear the squeak is louder. If I put belt dressing on it ,it will stop for a litte bit. Or if it spray down the idler pulley itll stop until I give it gas. The squeak gets worse at higher rpms. I'm not sure what action I should take next. Any ideas?
i just took off the belt and spun all the pullies...ps is the only one with a little drag...i cleaned all the gunk out of the pullies and it still sqeaks...i just took off the idler pulley again....the bolt that hold the pulley together is ever so slightly bent...im not sure if thats that problem or not..but im about to go get a new bolt..ill post an update when i get back
i replaced the bolt for my idler pulley. It didnt help so i put dielectric grease on both sides of the belt and it cut out the squeaking while it idles. When I give it gas it starts to sqeak again. not as bad as before but it sounds like it is coming from around the alternator pulley.
sorry about not being too clear on that the ps pump is hydrolic so it will have some drag. have you noticed the lights dimming when using anything electrical, ie power locks or windows? also sounds like one of the pullies could be slightly missalingned, did you check the tentioner itself for play?
i'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem. poolpunk, the bolt was bent on mine also, i'm assuming it was from the stress from the belt and i'm sure it'll happen to the new bolt unless its hardend or its made out of d2. anyway, i've been fighting this probem forever and it ticks me off to no end. i'm not sure but the dressing i got from the maintenance dept. at my work is a special formula but i'm told its better than anything at the parts store. i tried it once at night after work so i couldn't exactly see but it worked for a little while but then it rained. i did it again a little and it worked....again, for awhile. saturday i took the can and sprayed all of the pulleys and the belt very well and it rained that night still no squeak, i think i got it. one thing i did notice was the noise seemed to come mostly from either the power-steering or the ac. i'll let you know if it comes back but try the dressing again or i'll find out what brand i used. good luck!
