Hey guys,
I pulled my fuel rail and injectors out of my 92 F150 5.0 L last night. When i unseated #3, i heard a sound like plastic snaping and i noticed a small piece of plastic broken away from under the bottom oring. Is this little piece replaceable or do i have to find a different injector? also where can i get new small injector filters and orings for these things?
They all look really cruddy, i am going to try and clean them like it says on fordfuelinjection.com and see what they look like afterwords.
i am pulling the motor to replace it and wanted to tend to these injectors since i have 210,000 miles on them.
i also broke the ceramic part on the end of the throttle cable when i was removing it, can this be repaired or should i get one from a bone yard?
I am guessing you broke the pintle cap off the end of the injector. those are replaceable, they simply snap on/off the end of the injector. When I replaced my injectors, 3 of the 6 caps, looked like they were melted, overheated or cracked, I think they are meant to protect the actual injector tip from nasty things that happen inside the combustion chamber.

8 new injectors will be expensive, they are about 80 or 90 bucks a piece from the dealer, I guess you could get aftermarket injectors for 50 bucks each, which is still expensive.
A new throttle cable assy. isn't too expensive, check the dealer price, if that is too much try NAPA.
Thanks for the info guys. I will replace the pintle cap then!!!! I was hoping it was something like that. They all need a good cleaning so i am going to follow the procedure on fordfuelinjection.com.
thanks guys for all your help.
Pulling the fuel injectors for cleaning and the passenger side second from the firewall left some plastic behind when I took it out of the motor. Looks like the injectors are original except for one... With the one exception they are all the yellow / orange Bosch EV1 style with the 4 hole design. Specifically it was two chunks about a 1/16" square from the discharge cap's flange.
In case it holds any relevancy... I am planning on taking off the lower plenum for cleaning.
What is the best way to get the plastic out? Will draining the oil do it? What do I risk by not getting them out?
if you can see them, try Q-tip smothered in grease, hopefully it sticks to Q-tip, or (at your own risk) acquire the wife'ies eye tweezers
This works too.
FWIW, I replaced injectors in my '95, 4wd, Eddie Bauer, 256,XXX miles. 4 broke the plastic retainer in the intake. I used thin needle nose pliers. I made sure that nothing was left behind before putting the replacement injectors in. If anything fell in the cylinder, I didn't bother me since on the start of the engine, any little bits of plastic that fell in, were expelled through the exhaust. I did change the oil after I knew the injectors weren't leaking at the fuel rail or in the intake.
I had 7 out 8 injectors bad. They all leaked and were killing my fuel mileage, cylinder bores, and rings. After swapping them out, no more hard starts, fuel mileage increased, and no smoking from the exhaust on startup.
I've got about 200k miles on the F150. Got it from an older mechanic who seemed to tackle the big stuff and let some details slide... missing a bolt on the valve cover haha. Not sure if they are the original fuel injectors... is there a bench test you can do to tell if the injectors are leaking? or is it moreso the symptoms: hard starts, poor fuel mileage, and smoking on startup that indicate leaky injectors?
Hard starting after up to operating temp is a good sign. When you have to hold the accelerator all the way down to start it after you get it up to temp, is a good sign.
Also, take each injector, using an air hose set anywhere around 40-50 psi, press it firmly against the top of the injector where the fuel would enter, then apply set air psi and look at the bottom of the injector where it would spray. If you see fuel permeating or dripping from the nozzle tip, its leaking.
Attached are photos of some of the injectors... I pulled the micro baskets from all of them except for the oddball which seemed to have blue plastic making up the basket, which I ended up shredding while trying to get the basket out.
The oddball still has the brass ring where it holds in the basket... I'll give it hell to get it out, but the opening is larger than the yellow injectors... injector rebuild kit coming in today so I'll see how it goes together.
Any words of advice on this newer style of injector? I am also not sure if is rated for the same lb/hr of fuel as the others.
