I put one in my 04 Lariat...i used the Eclipse AVN 5435...was easy to install
with Metra harness and trim kit took ...me less than 2 hours.. Unit works awesome. cost for all the parts was $1695.00
I don't know what the cost would be or if it's possible, but my wife has Ford's new nav system in her 06 Five Hundred, and it's great. Touch screen and very similiar to the other top end units out there w/ address book, POI's, map routing, voice direction, 6 disc cd changer (seperate slot for the NAV DVD so it doesn't use up a cd slot), sirius satellite ready, etc..
You know what my in dash nav system is? A map in the glove box.
Works well, unless the map doesn't know about the local road closings, you don't wear glasses and have to stop driving to read the map, or if you are married... Those who are know what I mean...
And you don't mind carrying fifty, a hundred local maps...
Seriously, preplaning on the computer with mapquest or any of the map making software is a good idea, but I often find myself 120 mile out, and trying to find the back way through one of the thousand or so little communities that we call Los Angeles. Or on vacation rolling from one little town to another, taking lots of interesting back roads, and wanting to find parks, gas stations, food, etc.
I've been using portable GPS units since the first year the the birds went 'public', but the indash talking ones are worth their weight in gold.
Nothing like it when you find the offramp is closed, the next two streets are jammed and you have to get from Echo Park to Torrence without freeways.
I usually carry two LA guide books with me, each as big as a phone book, but they only cover about a third of the local areas.
