Clunking into reverse

Hi Folks,
Some time since I have been here on the sight. Must be because my
78 Ford F250 400/C6 has been purring just great. But now a problem has arose seems like it was very slight in the beginning when I first heard it. From drive to reverse or from Park to reverse or even nuetral to reverse There is a clunk. I have replaced all of my u-joints. All of the yokes on the shafts look great and feel tight. Cannot seem to budge them with a big set of channel locks in either direction. Yet when the motor is running and I shift in any of the above order I hear the clunk which vibrates through the whole cab.It only happens going to reverse with or without the brake peddle pressed. And now it seems to be getting louder and a harder clunk. Shifting to drive is sweet and smooth from any shifter position.

I would sure appreciate you ford enthusiasts drive train experience with my problem.

I experience this same problem and have done everything that you have done. My advise is to check your motor mounts. My right side one is junk and i believe that is why this happens to me. I just haven't gotten around to fixin it.

I can't believe you guys haven't seen my fix for this.

Take the driveshaft out and in side the front receiver spline put some high temp wheel bearing grease in there.
A handful should do.
Now put the driveshaft back on...

No more clunk.

All,
Dennis could be right but, if it does it without the brake applied, it is more likely the backlash in the differential.
1. Jack the rear end off the ground.
2. Put the trans in neutral.
3. Grab the driveshaft and rotate it clocwise/counterclockwise.
If there is more than 1/4 " play you need to adjust the rear end. I like to set mine at 1/8" play.
While your at it, push and pull on the driveshaft and see if the pinion flange is moving in and out of the rearend. If it is, you can adjust that also, after you've pulled the diff.

I seem to remember hearing about a recall or TSB about this problem.. Anybody else see that? I can't seem to find it now.

I agree with the rear end gears being worn.
when you are in reverse the gears try to seperate
from each other due to slack in the meshing.

I found the recall/tsb. But the web site wants to charge for the info now. Check it out here:

Had that problem, only on a Dodge V8 with Std. transmission.
turned out to be loose transmission mounting bolts.
