I think someone is jerking your chain... I am on my 4th set of 285's on 2 different trucks and my speedo is exactly right,, It was actually 3 mph fast with the factory 265's, which i changed out within the first 100 miles.Had 305's once too, speedo was 1mph fast then.
Increasing your tire size with a small change isn't going to affect your speedo etc. I can see a problem if you are slapping on a set of 44" super swampers then you may have problems.
The Michelin LTX M/S is a great tire. I have run them on 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons (8 sets) and have had excellent luck in Colorado and New Mexico backcountry as well as highway. Get the 10 ply, load range E. Best milage was 100K on a half ton pickup. They do well in mud, but they are not a great snow tire. I run LT265/75R16s and my GPS says my speedo is accurate. The original tire was a LT235/85/R16. The circumferance is almost identical on both sizes.
It all depends on what size of tire you are running the quietest highway tire is the Michelin LTX M/S. If your looking for a good all use tire the TOYO M-55 or Bridgestone V-Steel VSX or Michelin XPS Traction or BFG Commercial T/A Traction. What alot of people around here are going with is Hankook Dynamic Radial Z-36 its a good all around use A/T.
Here is another vote for TOYO's, I actually wanted the M-55's but at the time my tire guy did not have them so I settled on the O/C AT's. A little more aggressive than most A/T's, and when it comes down to it, I just have a personal dislike for BFG's, probably because they are so popular, I don't like the tread design, and personally I think they suck in snow, are marginal in mud, as are most A/T tires, especially the slick clay "black dirt" we can encounter in these parts. THere is one saying they have about that stuff, "If you stick with it through the dry, it will sure stick with you during the wet season. " No, for snow, wet, black ice, and mud, I want something better than the BFG A/T. (Now I know I will get flamed).
The "they" i am referring to are tire dealers. a firestone dealer in particular. I have to say that I believe you guys before i will take his word. Sounds like the bfg's and the michelin are the most popular. thanks for the info
When I bought my '99 about six months ago it had a new set of TOYO's on it. I believe TOYO is one of the better values for performance against other brands. I also bought Toyo Proxes 4's for my Passat. I am very pleased with both the noise and handling of the passat and psd. I primarily do towing with my rig and mostly highway at that so I cannot attest to offroad or mud.
But for price/performance ratio . . . TOYO is at least worth a solid consideration.
PS. Toyos make a lot of larger truck tires as well, used quite a lot as commercial tires. Nitto's seem to be pretty good, and have seen quite a few trucks with the Terra Grapplers on them, the tread was too shallow for me so was concerned how many miles would get out of them. The other one I was wondering about at the time was the Goodyear silent armor, comes on wranglers I think. My criterea was I would only consider load range E tires. The higher grade Firestone I would probably consider as well. Michelins are good, had them on one truck, but very pricey compared to the alternatives.
My cousin used to be a diehard BFG man but he's changed he says for the price of them they just don't last. Another person I know runs BFG A/Ts and they wear out quick they don't last.
For a good all around tire the Michelin LTX M/S is hard to beat for a good traction tire the TOYO M-55 is good a little noisy but thats okay.
