I've found a 75 2WD with a 6000 MI 460 C-6 combo parting out and I am picking the complete 460 motor mounts,brackets and such included to swap in my 78 4WD 400 C-6 camper special.
My question is this what parts should I make sure and get to help with this swap?
I know I need the flywheel and brackets, but what else?
Will the power steering work what about What about the oil pan? What other problems am I going to have ?
get the most you can for your money but the mount brackets are the most important. Try to get tranny and all of the accesories on the engine, and if it has the small diameter brake booster get that to. It makes pulling the valve cover easier
Why take the tranny it's a 2wd? Can I make it work on a 4wd? I have not done very much swapping of trany stuff before so please excuse the lack of knowledge on this subject.
Please excuse the all caps as this is the way it appears in the article.
Unfortunately the person who wrote it didn't know all caps is a no-no.
I will post in bold so it is easier to read too.
460 SWAP
1977-79 F100/150 4 WD WITH A 351M/400 ENGINE AND C-6 TRANSMISSION.
IS THE TRANSMISSION GOING TO BOLT UP TO THE BIGGER ENGINE ? YES
WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE THE EXHAUST ? YES
WILL I HAVE TO GET DIFFERENT MOTOR MOUNTS FOR THE 460? YES
WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE THE MOTOR MOUNT TOWERS? NO
WILL THE POWER STEERING BRACKETS FROM THE 351M WORK ON THE 460 ? NO
WILL THE ALTERNATOR BRACKETS FROM THE 351M WORK ON THE 460 ? NO
DID FORD EVER OFFER A 4 WD TRUCK WITH A 460 ENGINE ? NO ONLY IN THE 2 WD MODELS
WILL THE FLYWHEEL FROM THE 351M/400 INTERCHANGE FROM EITHER AUTO TRANS. OR MANUAL TRANS? NO THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY THE 460 FLYWHEEL ARE BALANCED. EXAMPLE SOME OF THE 429/460 IN THE EARLY 70'S WERE EXTERNALLY BALANCED WHICH REQUIRED A WEIGHTED DAMPNER SPACER. WHEN YOU BUILD YOUR ENGINE MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW IT IS BALANCED BECAUSE IF YOU PUT THE WRONG SPACER OR FLYWHEEL YOU WILL GET ONE HELL OF A VIBRATION WHEN YOU START THE ENGINE, AND PRETTY QUICK YOU WILL POUND THE MAIN BEARS RIGHT OUT.
460 SWAP
1973-77 F-250 4 WD WITH 360-390 ENGINE AND C-6 TRANSMISSION
WILL THE 460 BOLT UP TO THE C-6 FROM 360 ENGINE? NO, DIFFERENT BOLT PATTERN
WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE THE EXHAUST? YES
WILL I HAVE TO GET MOTOR MOUNTS FOR THE 460? YES
WILL I HAVE CHANGE THE MOTOR MOUNT TOWERS ON THE FRAME ? YES TOWERS FOR THE 360 SET TO HIGH FOR THE 460 BLOCK.
WILL THE ALTERNATOR OR POWER STEERING BRACKETS FROM THE 360 ENGINE FIT THE 460? NO ...FORD DID NOT OFFER THE 460 AS A OPTION IN THE F-250 4 WD TRUCKS FROM 73-79.

When I swapped mine from a 351 to a 460 I had to change that frame mounts. The holes are already in the frame but the mounts are different. I need a 460 truck oilpan and pick-up. Anybody got one????
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Aug-02 AT 01:56 AM (EST)]The internals of the c-6's are the same on 2wd and 4x4 if you ever need the tranny rebuilt the 2wd would be an excelent core, the tranny builder can use the guts of the 2wd and the case of the 4x4, this would ave you a lot of money.
You might also have to change the oil pan and oil pickup tube, this need to be a rear sump pan unless you have lots of suspension lift. With a front sump pan, your pumpkin will hit it, try to find one with a dipstick in it (if they make one) I used an after market pan, but I couldn't check my oil because the stock dipstick was buy the distributer.
I was able to use my stock powersteering setup, It sat very close to the frame and I believe I had to shim the brackets out to line up the pully's, then I also had to measure for the belt.
If you swap oilpans, look me up, I'd like to get a 460truck oilpan and oick-up. Mine is from a car, and my drainplug is right next to the frame. Plus it only holds 4 quarts instead of 5. + 1 in filter.
