I have an 86 f-150 with 300 inline six mated to a 4 speed trans with granny gear. When i first got the truck the transmission would pop out of 3rd gear if you did not hold it in. Now it will pop out of 3rd gear under load(such as going up a hill) even if you do hold it in. I have been gettin by using mainly 2 and 4th, but the gas mileage sucks and its annoying. My question is should i look for a good used trans and replace it with that or should I try to fix it when it comes out. Is the problem most likely a worn gear or something else. Im fairl capable mechanically, i worked as a line tech in a shop for 3 years before coming to college. Is this a job that i want to tackle or should i leave it to a professional or once again should i just try to find a good used trans. Im looking for the least expensive way out that i'm capable of performing. Thanks
It definitely needs a rebuild if it's slipping out of gear. You can try to rebuild it yourself, but you need to identify the tranny first, it's either a T-18 or an NP435. Look at the door post code if it's original, A=NP435 and F=T-18.
There are rebuild kits around if you have the downtime available and the tools to tackle it yourself.
There are also a ton of these things in the junkyard. They get horrible gas mileage so no one really wants one, but they're tougher than nails. It's not unusual to put over 500k miles on one before they go. I have to wonder what you did to yours to break it.
Yea i wonder what the previous owner did to it as all i have heard about these trannies is that there indestructible although the tranny itself has 268,00 miles on it i believe. thanks for the quick response andym. Anyone have a tranny laying around?

Hi, I have the exact same truck, (mine is 4x4,) and it had the same problem. I replaced the bearings in the trans, (not the countershaft bearings,) and that took care of it. You may also have to refurbish the shifter too. Check the shift fork for wear.
It was the first time I had opened one of these and it was an easy job. I was impressed with the transmission, they probably use the same unit in a five ton truck too. It's very heavily built.
Bdox, mine is also a 4x4, by shift fork do you mean the the lever that the clutch slave cylinder moves to operate the clutch or actually something in the transmission? I have dealt with motors and just about everything else on a car except transmissions so please excuse my ignorance. thanks
I read somewhere that if you tow these trucks equipped with the NP 435 with the driving wheels on the ground, it is susceptible to rapid wear. It isn't recommended that you do this. The symptom of this rapid wear is that 3rd gear will pop out while driving under load. This seems the likely case with your truck.
Hi,
By shift fork, I meant the part mounted on the shift rails which are mounted inside the cover of the transmission. The fork fits into a groove on the selector hub which when moved, locks the mainshaft to one gear or another.
You can get a look by removing the carpet, and the sheet metal cover above the transmission. Put the transmission in neutral, unbolt the cover (which the floor shifter goes through,) and carefully lift up the whole assembly. Get a book with an exploded view of the tranmission so you can idtentify the parts.
In my truck, I had to change the mainshaft bearings because they were loose enough that the gears (maybe the whole mainshaft,) could move for and aft enought that shifter was not pushing the selector hub all the way into third position.
Well i do infact have the NP-435, and I would bet money that the towing issue is what ruined my third gear. Thanks for all the replies and valuble information.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the text in the box that says "A Cautionary Issue on Towing". It's kind of interesting that this page on converting and adapting transmissions to Jeeps came up. It's a useful page to find out info on your Manual transmission. I don't have this problem on my truck, I just wanted to find out how to identify my transmission. I hope this helps...
