Cool Gotta Vent

My son just bought a basket case 1950 F2. The engine had been boiled out and bored. All new parts are in the baskets to rebuild engine. We started to put the crank in last night, but ran into a problem. The crank has been turned .020" undersize on both main and rod bearings. The brand new bearing sets are all .010" oversize. AGHHH! Now we have to buy new bearings!

Anyone want to buy brand new main and rod bearings set that are .010" oversize???

Thanks for listening,
Danny

Danny -

Boy, you guys have guts! I look at any engine in a basket as just a good way to get the parts to the trash can! Unless I took it apart, I won't even consider trying to put it back together. Too many stories.

I think this may not be the last surprise in your "goody bag" of parts.

Engine Parts Supplier

Where is a good place to get internal engine parts, specifically main and rod bearings or a crankshaft for the flat head 6 cylinder. I posted earlier that I have a new set of .010" main & rod bearings for my .020" crankshaft. My 2 options are to buy new bearing sets or buy crankshaft and have it turned to .010".

Thanks,
Danny

Phone calls are great but not nearly as informing as posts. Your problems and solutions, if properly titled can be a great help to future generations of FTE.

As the great Ford-eye Master,O-be-one-kafordbe, once said: "I can give a jump to a man and keep him running for a day, or teach him to replace his battery and keep him rolling for a lifetime."

LET THE FORDS BE WITH YOU!

ps: For the parts, you might try Kanter auto parts. They are big on complete kits like suspension, brakes, etc. Good luck, Jag

Have you tried NAPA or CarQuest? They carry alot of older parts for trucks. I use them all the time.

Sorry about that Danny. I was sure the thrust bearing on my 272 went on the rear main journal. Needless to say, I now have an extra set of 0.010 oversize main bearings for a 272 - including a bent thrust bearing.

Seems like I bought mine directly from Clevite - or maybe got Clevite bearings through NAPA - can't remember.

Dennis Carpenter in North Carolina...but it looks like alot of people have gone up in price on flathead internals.

I got bearings for my 239 OHV from a local parts shop that has been around a long time...you might get lucky in your area with an old shop.

good luck, Ed

That engine is not so hard to get the engine parts for. Try hatch grinding, heads by paul, motor rebuilders, mountainside, sams vintage ford, blah blah blah. Danny, it would help us to help you if we knew where you live, Colorado is a big area. Good luck.

Danny,

Look at the bright side. At least you noticed they were .010 instead of .020 before putting them in. You could have installed them and found out when all the bearings were knockin'...

I live between Denver and Colorado Springs just off I25. It is in the Larkspur mailing area, but I'm about 10 miles from the town.

Try a Ford tractor dealer. Lots of engine parts interchange and a good parts man should be able to help.

Basket case is an accurate term because when I buy a basket case that`s what I become after finding out what just how bad things can get!

Red face

When I bought my 53 thirty years ago, the motor was in pieces in boxes. I didn't know much about engines, and didn't realize that the bearings were standard, but the crank had been turned down .020. When I got it running it sounded like bongo drums when going uphill with a load of firewood. Still, I managed to get the truck from California to New England by running a mix of STP oil treatment and 40 weight. Are these great trucks or what!
