I would be OK with people passing me, but that ever growing number of people that pass me and slow down to a speed that is less than the speed they were traveling behind me is kind of makes me hate it.

In all seriousness, I know I need to calm down behind the wheel. I'm usually in more of a hurry than I need to be. OK, that is my Wednesday resolution. My Tuesday revolution was to stop mugging little old ladies for drug money. By the end of the week I'll be a model citizen.

What people don't realize in my neck of the woods is that the left lane is not the lane to take a Sunday drive in.

Really chaps my hide to see some trucker have to slow down, pull back into the right lane, and them hammer down only to hit a hill cause the jerk in the left lane finally thought to give it a tad bit of gas (just enough not to let the truck by).

So many serious answers to an original post that was tongue-in-cheek. Gotta love it.

Here in VA, double yellow doesn't apparently have much meaning, but a tunnel...well now, there's gotta be a law that says slow down, because you obviously can't drive as fast in the same amount of space and manage to keep it between the lines simply because there are now walls on either side of you. I mean, people routinely do 10-15 mph over the limit around here, but put them in a tunnel, they turn into grandma gurdy...

Happens when you put a jersey barrier on both sides of the road too.

is what you call a jersey barrier what we call a K-rail around here? cause i haul grain in the semi, and people go flying by you then 5 minutes later and you are now going the slower construction speed limit and catch them holding up trafic because there is a k-rail 8 inches off either side. give me a break your in a neon and im an a 102" pete and you cant go 55 and not skip off a rail. learn to drive.

I don't know. Is a K-Rail made of concrete, weigh 5780 pounds and look like this?

I see by yer profile that you are in FL. Have you noticed if these drivers are elderly? If so, maybe they were taught differently in drivers Ed, years ago? Or maybe they get disoriented or confused driving so close to a double yellow? Did they have double yellow lines for the past 40, 50, 60+ years? (I honestly don't know.)

Or maybe these people know that those areas are "speed traps" and don't want to chance it?

double yellow means no passing.. period. a solid line with a broken line on your side means you're allowed to pass. one sngle broken line means both directions of traffic can use the oncoming lane as a passing lane, provided they can pass safely.

Double yellow solid, double double yellow (island), double dashed, solid w/dashed or turn only lanes are all meaningless to native drivers in the city of Oakland.

That looks like what I see around the KC metro. They do come in several heights and configurations tho. Basically variations on a theme.

It is amusing (almost) to see some little econobox driver hit the brakes when they get between some of those. Especially when they are following some semi that is having no problems and clears them by a foot or more on each side. Some people only had to use two box-tops to get their license. -Wait, maybe the box-top IS their license...

The yellow line designations have been the same for at least 40 years.

Actually, the color of the line is immaterial. If the line is solid, you are not supposed to cross it to continue travel. If the line is broken, you can cross it. This applies to white and yellow lines. Yellow means traffic on the other side is opposing. White means traffic on the other side is traveling the same way.

Okay, so who's old enough to remember when the dotted lines were all white, and the only yellows were the double yellows? I think each state was different, but as I recall, Ca. switched in about '70 or '71. I remember walking out onto the county road in front of our ranch for closer look when they changed them to yellow.

The line down the middle of the road was invented by a woman in California. She just did it on her own to help with head on collisions. Before that, I imagine every car you came upon, you got ready for a game of chicken. Now, some places have so many lines, it's almost as bad..
