Hey guys I ran into another problem today with my 1996 f-150 4x4. The check engine light has been on since I got it ,so I took it to the local advanced auto to have it put on the scanner to get the code. Well the scanner wouldn't even turn on. So I took it down the road to the Autozone hoping the other scanner just wasn't working and there's didn't either. The guy working there put the scanner on another car and it worked fine. Anyone know what I need to do or what the problem may be?Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is also a 5.0, 5 speed.
I would take the truck to a mechanic. The people who work at parts store often have no experience at all working on cars. All they really know how to do is look up parts and pull them off the shelf for you.
I understand what you are saying, but it seems like that hooking up a scanner to check for codes would be a pretty simple thing but I have never done it so I don't know. I was hoping I could find the code and fix it so I could save the money that a dealer is going to charge.
Personally, my first step in this case would be to disconnect the battery for several minutes and then reconnect it and let the entire system reset itself. As your truck is a 96 I will guess that you have an OBD11 system and I don't know how to retrieve those codes without a scanner. Go to the fordfuelinjection web site and see if there is a way to pull the codes w/o a scanner. If you can't retrieve codes w/o a scanner, after you have reset the EEC go back to AutoZone or whatever and see if they can now pull the codes for you. Post back and let us know.
Had a similar prob with my 96. CEL was on, and I couldn't pull a code. Turned out the fuse kept blowing because the ground wire for my cig. lighter wasn't connected. This fuse also controls the OBDII diagnostic port. Might not be your problem but you could check the fuse out.
