I have a C5 manual transmission (actually TWO trannys) but I want to put an automatic in and want to know what you think of the automatics out there. Also I need to know what parts I need to convert it.
you got a what? you got how many? what exactly do you have, 3speed, or 4 speed manual trans? i am 44 years old and very lazy, and i do not like that third pedal getting in my way. i would go automatic except in rare cases. by the way, a c5 is an automatic tranny.
I see that you have a 302 in your truck, I will tell you what you need provided your truck is a column shift manual now:
You will need an automatic steering column from a '73-'77 2wheel drive, with the same type steering as yours (manual/power)a '78-'79 column will work too, but you will have to change/rework the wireing.
You will need a flywheel, torque converter, and either a C4,C6, or FMX automatic trans with a small block bolt pattern(the C4 will be the easiest to come by)you will also need the shift rod that hooks from the arm on the column, to the one on the trans, plus the kickdown rod that runs from the carb to the lever on the trans, you will need a different radiator with a built in cooler or a separate cooler for the trans fluid, if it were me doing a swap like this I'd try & find a complete truck and get everything you need at one time, I know I've left out something, so may be someone else will jump in & help, too.
Ok, sorry, Im an idiot!:P It is a three speed column shift manual. I got the C5 crap from a non-trustable source (hate those). I have a tranny fluid cooler already but will look for those other pieces.
