bent fuel filter connector

i was servicing this ranger i just got from my friend and was able to change every thing except the fuel filter. It has a dent in the rear spring lock connector, an i am unable to get the tool in there to release it is there a repair for the connector. Its just a flat spot on one side.

I'm thinking a special tool is not what you need. Try pushing on the colored part of the clip with a screwdriver end. Once you push it in, pull the connector off the filter. Let me know if this worked.

this is an older one with the steel connectors not like the new ones with plastic

my '06 has these colored plastic things, is that what you do, simply depress to disconnect ? I'd seen reference to this but haven't had a chance to try it yet.
