Rear end howl update…
Like many of the 03 Explorers I was getting the god awful howl at 35mph and up. A trip to the dealer (under warranty) reveled the rear axle and bearing problem. Kemp Ford in Thousand Oaks did the work the first time. Horrible shop just don’t go there if you can help it. I only when there because my normal dealer was booked for weeks (literally). SO the first time in they replaced the differential gear and bearings. Said the problem was fixed and I could come and picker up. I drive it off the lot and notice absolutely no difference. I call Kemp and they say that what I’m hearing is normal road noise for an Explorer. This is my second explorer and it is no where near normal.
Round two I take it to my normal dealer (Galpin Ford) and they replace the entire rear wheel assembly and the bearing again??? Tell it’s fixed and when I pick it up, it sounds better but still just too much noise from the rear end. I ask my service rep and they take another look at it- luckily for me on the same trip this time. And the shop guy says it’s a flat spot in the tires. I’m thinking he is full of ****. These are the BF GOODRICH Rugged Trail with less than 20k on them and rotated like clock work.
Against all my better judgment I when and got a new set of tires, I go with a set of General Ameritrac- factory take offs from a local custom wheel shop.
The difference is unbelievable. It’s like a whole new truck. I’ve seen a couple of post here about shop saying it’s a “flat spot” on the tires but nobody ever mentions brand. Anyone else having a problem with this tire?
Anyways the problem is finally fixed and I’m back to loving my truck.
