Hello everyone I have 96 explorer xlt with 5.0 awd..
I have a very strange problem.. after I turn the key off the engine revs a little high and then shuts off about 3-5 seconds later. Its very odd.. it doesnt happen all the time but it has happened twice in 2 days. I am beginning to think I just bought a lemon.
really a faulty egr? that would be very swell seeing as how I just ordered a new egr valve, and picked up a egr postition sensor. The valve will be here in the morning and i'll do the sensor at the same time.. if that doesnt fix it I'm going to replace the vacuum solenoid too but I think its ok from doing the blow test.
man aggy you have done wonders for me.. thanks for all your help on this post and the other.
I am so frustrated with my truck right now. I just got it last monday and it seems as though its falling apart on me already.
anyways.. gotta eat an elephant one bite at a time as they say..
The full list of things to check for dieseling is :
1. high idle speed
2. ignition timing wrong
3. valves sticking
4. vacuum leak at intake or hoses
5. wrong spark plug
6. large build-up of carbon in the combustion chamber
7. fuel injector problem
8. EGR system fault
These aren't in any specific order and you're right about eating an elephant one bite at a time.Be methodical and you will get your truck running very sweetly and enjoy it all the more.
ok the idle speed is around 1k rpms but that's not adjustable correct?
i will check timing soon, not sure how to check sticky valves. I'll spray some carb cleaner around intake to see if it revs indicating a leak there, spark plugs are brand new motorcrafts, not sure how to check carbon buildup, fuel injector problems maybe, egr system very likely (threw code a day ago, hasnt come back though)
its just very weird that it only does it every so often.
