Hey guys. I don't know much about diesels, but I'm here to do research for my father, who has a 1990 f250 diesel xlt ( with gale banks turbo ). It's getting tired, paint, stereo ( or lack there of . . . ), and performance. He says he'll drive it till the wheels fall off. I, personally, love it. I think it has so much potential. I'm here to get ideas from you guys on mods for performance and it's over all well being. I hear much about getting performance copmuter modules, 4'' exhaust and whatnot, but what is available for my dads truck? Any tips and/or help is greatly appreciated.
I'm pretty sure there are no ECM chips available for the IDI diesels, the computer in these rigs pretty much just tell the engine when to shut off and tell the tranny when to shift. Pretty limited, but a good reason why they're dependable.
first on the to do list & its free remove the soup bowl from the air cleaner lid to let er breath, good for maybe 5 hp & 1/2 mpg & takes 5 min tops w/air chisel.
A cleaner and easier way to remove the "soup bowl" is to drill out the six spot welds that hold it in.
I honestly didn't see any improvement at all in mine when I removed it though.
if you already have the banks turbo you won't have a soup bowl in the air cleaner because you will will have a pressure chamber in place of the air cleaner. if it is a sidewinder you will have a minimum 3" exhaust already and possibly a 3.5" exhaust. if it is non-wastegated turbo you should also have a 3" exhaust, but you would have to check for sure, (i am not familliar with the non-wastgated version) also on the banks exhaust check the size of the pipe before the muffler, mine is 3" before and 3.5" after the muffler.
