I'm new to the diesel world. I just picked up an 87 f-250 with the 6.9 that is completely stock. My question is in regards to performance mods. everything that I have read on here is either about bringing a truck back from the dead or turbo this turbo that. what are the mods that can be done for a N/A diesel.

welcome to fte,
what kinda milage is on the injection pump and injectors? you can make a ram-air intake, better flowing exaust, buy a pyrometer, and maybe turn the fuel up a hair

I too was new to owning a diesel truck, and wanted to get what I could out of my truck without going the turbo route. You can see in my signature (below) what I have done and plan to do to get better mileage and reliability out of this beast of mine.
The Banks "Stinger" set-up (no longer made) seemed to be the best one could do for these naturally-aspirated IDI engines. It's a combination of a better intake and less restrictive exhaust that was engineered and marketed by Banks to get the most out of a non-turbo IDI equipped Ford.
Scrounge around and you can most probably find one.

For all I know the injection pump and injectors might be stock too. So that means 370000 miles. I got the truck for the cost of one tire and a couple of hours on a battery charger. then I fired it up and drove away.
I did an oil change, oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter today and it made a huge difference in the power.Next I need to do the coolant, tranny fluid and tranny filter.
what kind of additive do I need to add to the coolant to prevent the cavitation?
As for exhaust what is the best method: large duals, small duals, large y-pipe, or an H-pipe?
Free flowing intake - ram air if possible
3" or 3.5" free flowing exhaust with a real y-pipe and a straight-through muffler - mandrel bent downpipes from the manifolds too if possible
Add a pyrometer & turn up the fuel a flat or so
I did all of the above to my first IDI (second truck in my signature) and it made a very noticeable difference.
My "butt-dyno" says those mods are good for at least 10+ additional HP and a corresponding increase in torque - which from what I've read puts you about even with the first generation turboed IDIs
You can always go with a $500 set of headers and that'll get you even a few more poinies...
But if you really want the most improvement you can get, a turbo is the anwer. Spendier, but worth it - especially if you do any towing in the mountains.
