I used the soaking method I also heard of that years ago and it worked on the headman set of gaskets, but it failed on the MrGasket. I have retorqued twice it got a little better but still leaks. The new headman gaskets will be here soon.
Thanks guys
jd
You need to retorque 3 or 4 times in the beginning before they start leaking. doing it after they leak is too little too late. I do it after each good heat cycle.
I don't have headers but after swapping in a new 390 I had exhaust manifold leaks. I tried two sets of the fel-pro gaskets without sucess. They still leaked after re-torquing. Next I went with the Mr. Gasket paper gaskets. Those leaked also. I now have the Mr. Gasket copper header gaskets. No leaks. They went on easy with all of the bolt holes lining up.
Well I installed the Headman header gaskets today with great success. I pre soaked them with a spray from a water bottle and before install I dabbed a bit of Never-Seeze around the seat area. Was real careful about getting them square before torqueing them down. I went over my torque sequence about 4 times and also put Never-Seeze on the bolts.
It runs without a bit of a leak, well not that these old deaf ears could hear.
You can see by the pictures below why the MrGaskets are so much worse than the Headmans.
