elec. treiler brakes

alrighty, i hooked up a 7 pin harness with controller tonight, question is, i had a 4 pin harness already so that plugs into the 7 pin with 3 wires left to hook up, blue=controller wire, black=+12 volts wire, and yellow=reverse, what the heck is the reverse wire, do i need it? this trailer has no reverse lights if that helps.

The reverse light connector is only needed if you trailer has reverse lights or if the trailer has surge brakes that need to be disabled when you're in reverse (otherwise the brakes would lock up when you back up.) If your trailer has no reverse lights and electric brakes, then you don't need the reverse light connection (eg. the 7 pin connector will work, but you could get by with a 6 pin connector.)

On a 7 pin connector, I think the orange (center pin) is supposed to be reverse light/aux and the yellow is supposed to be the left turn signal.

My data and the page that Colorado-native mentioned states that the center pin is usually the back-up lights, but I have heard of some 6 and seven pin connectors that use the center pin for the brake signal. Colorado's reference also states:

On the tow vehicle side with the exception of 96-98 Ford and Dodge pickups and SUV's with factory installed trailer wiring, wire color alone should not be relied on, always test and match the function to the appropriate terminal.
As for yellow bring L turn, I was thinkng of a 4 pin connector. I think I am mistaken as far as the 7 pin connector goes.

Nothing beats a test on your individual vehicle, so if you have checked the connectors on your vehicle and are certain that the center pin is the brake, I would rely on that above all other soures of data.
