Towing and Brakes

I was told by someone that they were told that Ford did not recommend pulling trailers with their F150 with 4 wheel disk brakes. Has anyone ever heard this, I know that we have a 1999 Ford 350 Superduty with 4 wheel disk brakes, and we have a brake controller installed for use when towing. They said that the brakes would not hold up if towing trailers with them. Anyone know of any type of these problems ? Thanks

I have heard no such thing. My sister used to have a 2000 F-250 with the 4 wheel disc brakes. I had to pull a 4 horse trailer that weighed 2600lbs empty, and it was full of construction garbage. I couldn't even tell it was back there. No trailer brakes either. I was only making a 30 minute trip in city traffic. Not sure about possible long term usage effects though. I am sure you would experience accelerated brake wear and fading driving like that all the time.

I have read in trailer Life and Ford Truck Bible that mid 90s and earlier F150's were not recommended for extended towing above 5,000 pounds. Maybe that is what the dealer meant?

The brakes and other systems on a 150 are marginal for heavy towing and that is probably what was meant.

Good Luck,

towing and brakes

I know that I see a lot of Fords from F150- Super Duty 350 pulling all sorts of trailers , and I thought that this sounded odd. My friend was told this by her husband , they bought a 2002 model F150 Crew Cab and he has been real protective of it, first it was couldn`t pull nothing until over 5000 miles because needed to be broke in, not to cause transmission problems, could understand that, but the brake one wasn`t quiet sure about. She has a 2 horse bumper pull trailer that she is needing to pull with it, and now he says that she can`t pull with it because it will ruin the brakes, because they are not made to pull anything.

Now I see the problem. It isn't the brakes, it's the nut that your friend married. He doesn't want his truck to be used for towing.

Replace the truck or the husband. There is nothing wrong with the truck...

The word's most popular pickup can't tow a 2 horse trailer?!?! Unless the guy replaced the bakes with some type of weak after-market brakes or brakes that are made for a Focus, (yeah, why would you so this?!) I don't see a problem. Yeah, there are 10,000+ pound trailers that a F350 Super Duty can pull that the F150 can't, but this is not the case here. If he's really worried about damaging his precious "Ford Tough" brakes, just tell him to get electric brakes for the trailer and a brake controller for the truck. Trailer brakes might actually be a legal requirement if the trailer is heavy enough (anything over 3500lb must have brakes on all axles in GA.)
