Went to hook up to a 7 pin trailer today and it was all messed up. The brake lights did the reverse of what they should, right turn signal didn't work etc... It's the original wiring from the truck and I imagine it's all rotted out or something. What I want to know is where to get a good 7 pin wiring harness for my truck that has preferable both a 7 pin and 4 pin hookup.
P.S. I have an Draw-Tite activator II trailer brake controller I want it to hookup to.
For the 4 pin get a Hoppy that plugs into your trucks wire harness at the rear of the bed above the bumper. If your truck had/has a factory/FOMOCO 7 pin that is messed up (corosion, spliced, or cut) take it off & replace w/ another factory/FOMOCO set-up. If your truck had a 7 pin "wired" in than remove it, & replace w/ factory/FOMOCO setup if you have the plugs under the bed. Otherwise buy a Hoppy and wire it in yourself. I suggest you take to self serve car wash and clean the crap out of the underside of the back end of the truck. If you have a lot of wire spaghetti under there you may want to remove the bumper from the truck, or let it hang down on the front (closer to cab) bolts so you can work from a creeper seat or bucket or milk crate. Use a good test light (one that shows hot/+ and cold/- wires while in use. Had to rewire my 97 250 previous owner had the 7 pin harness cut & spliced a 6 pin to it. Took it all out and started over like it was never there.
Are you sure it was in the right way? Not upside down? I only ask because my son keeps doing this to my horse trailer and the plug isn't even supposed to go in wrong but sometimes different brand female and male connectors will go together the wrong way.
Other option is someone wired your truck or trailer by the old dodge wiring diagram. They were different untill the mid 90's. Don't ask me why. I hated it. I just got done rewiring all my neighbors trailers because he bought a new Ford and junked the dodge. I had made up adapters to use his trailers before and now I don't need them any more.
I just reread this. Did you borrow that trailer from someone that tows it with a dodge by any chance? Your trailer connector should be factory installed. I'll bet his isn't or is the old dodge wiring. You may not even have a problem.
Cost? No idea. Think my FOMOCO harness was $70.00 , the Hoppy 4pin was less than $20.00 . You could keep an eye on Wal-Mart, Pep Boys or other auto parts store. The 7 pin definatly @ dealer unless you go w/ Hoppy for that too.
No I'm 100% sure the problem is with my truck's wiring. The trucks that tow that trailer are an '04 F-350 crewcab longbed dually 6.0, a '05 F-350 regular cab, and an '06 F-550 with a dumpbed so its definitely wired for fords. I really just don't trust 13 year old wires that have been exposed to all the conditions under my truck and would like to replace them for piece of mind.
